Blog Day 154 - Tuesday 25 August 2020

Shrine volunteer zoom meeting this morning and some lively and intelligent conversation was enjoyed by all.

The premier has announced today that he is proposing to extend the state of emergency in Victoria for 12 months from when it expires in September.  As you could imagine this proposal hasn't received universal support from the good folk of this fair state.  The proposal has to be passed through both houses of the Victorian parliament.  The premier has a majority in the lower house but he will be dependant on votes of the cross benches to get it through the upper house.  At the time of writing it doesn't look like enough of the independents will support the proposal to get it through.  The premier's case isn't helped by his attempt to explain the proposal during his media conference today which was a bit of a dog's dinner.

More to come on this story I daresay.

In the last 24 hours Victoria reported 148 new virus infections, this is an increase on the previous day's tally of 116 but is still low by recent historical standards.  Eight Victorians died in the last 24 hours bringing to 438 the total number of deaths in this state.  Australia wide we have reported a total of 525 deaths.  It would appear that all the recent deaths recorded in the Australia wide figures have all occurred in Victoria.  There are 617 Victorians in hospital (659 Australia wide) and 35 in ICU with 19 on ventilators.

The worldwide figures aren't telling us much but the new infections and deaths appear to be staying a little bit lower, but that means there could be a bumper day tomorrow, lets hope not.

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no, remain vigilant, act responsibly, apologise if you are wrong, use Zoom to keep in touch and be kind.
