Blog Day 160 - Monday 31 August 2020

Blog Rant Number 1: On my walk today I was walking behind a young couple with a baby in a pusher, neither of the couple were wearing masks and the male was smoking whilst walking next to the baby. They also ensured that they took up the entire footpath and the certainly didn't look as though they would have taken kindly to any constructive criticism or advise about wearing masks or smoking around the baby for that matter.  (And this used to be such a nice suburb).

Blog Rant Number 2: In today's virus figures we have been advised that 41 new deaths were added to the state total overnight.  Eight of these were deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, however, and get this, 33 of these deaths are previously unrecorded "historical" deaths.  Thirty three deaths not previously advised, or recorded, or reported, or just missed.  This pandemic has been with us for 5 months and we still can't get the counting and reporting of the deceased right.  It will be interesting to listen to the premier try and skate his way around this today. (In his news conference this morning the premier couldn't be bothered trying to explain this and has left it up to the CHO whose explanation will need translating and investigation.)

I did hear that the person who maintains these figures has been on a RDO and the other 15 people in the department have been busy with diversity and cultural awareness training.

It was obvious that there was something amiss this morning as for the last couple of weeks the daily figures have been released around 9.00am each morning.  Prior to that the worse the news the later the release of the figures and the later the media conference, so when the figures were late being released today I was expecting there to be an increase in the number of infections.  Fortunately it wasn't that but a stuff up with the reporting of the number of deaths.

The premier has announce this morning that the program for moving ahead and hopefully out of this mess will be announced next Sunday.

Victoria has recorded 73 new infections for the last 24 hours, this is a good result and is continuing the downward trend.  As advised above Victoria has reported 41 new deaths, 8 of those in the last 24 hours and 33 at some time currently undeclared.  (The premier hasn't given any reason for the 33 deaths not being previously reported).  There are 453 Victorians in hospital out of a nationwide figure of 501, 21 Victorians in ICU and 13 on ventilators.

The worldwide infection and death figures are lower today but as we have seen in the past the Monday figures are hopelessly unreliable and I would expect the figures to rise again as the week progresses.

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: please don't go to the beach, to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no, remain vigilant, act responsibly, apologise if you are wrong, use Zoom to keep in touch, put your bins out before curfew, don't smoke around your baby and be kind.
