Blog Day 161 - Tuesday 01 September 2020

A saying for the day "Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things" and I so advise.

An amusing and interesting Shrine zoom meeting this morning where amongst many other things (would you believe little grey Massey Ferguson tractors) we discussed the movie "The Flanders Flag".  This was a propaganda movie made in England in 1943 about a Belgian air force officer returning to German occupied Belgium to recover the unit colours that had been buried when the Germans were invading.  Very patriotic, very overacted but very amusing which I am sure wasn't the movie's intentions.  Anyway it led to some robust discussion particularly what would have happened if the Germans had successfully invaded Britain.

On my walk today did not see anyone not wearing a mask, except for some bicycle riders who are legally exempted but still irritating.

Sat up for a while last night watching stage three of Le Tour, although the nights of sitting up till 2.00 or 3.00am are beyond me.  This is a pity as an Australian, Caleb Ewan, won the stage last night in what was apparently an exciting finish.  Although Ewan won last night he doesn't get to wear the yellow jersey as he is not the overall leader of the race.  Fortunately SBS are replaying the highlights for an hour at 5.30pm each night so I will get to watch that whilst have a civilised vodka and tonic.

Virus figures for the last 24 hours are available.  Victoria recorded 70 new infections for the last 24 hours down from 73 for the day before.  We recorded 5 further deaths, but apparently 2 or 3 of these are unreported from previous days.  Victoria has had 570 virus related deaths out of a national total of 657.  We have 421 people in hospital out of a national total of 481 and we have 20 in ICU out of 27.

The Victorian figures are heading in the right direction with the reduction in new infections and hospitalisations now being reflected in a reduction in the number of deaths.  Hopefully something is being done to ensure the reporting of the death numbers is now accurate.

Still not much to report in the international figures, no meaningful movement in either direction.

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: please don't go to the beach, to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no, remain vigilant, act responsibly, apologise if you are wrong, use Zoom to keep in touch, put your bins out before curfew, don't smoke around your baby and be kind.

  1. Watching Le tour or poking pins in my eyes, hmmmm I think I'll go with the pins. Interesting news from the Tas front by my bro, still not allowed to come home and the offer by the premier to pay for people to quarantine expires tmwr (Wed). So I am very confident that all those Taswegians wanting to go home will be allowed to as of Thursday when everyone has to pay $2800 for the mandatory 2 week quarantine accommodation. Another interesting note is that the accommodation is at the Casino's (Hob and Laun). Poor Casinos must be doing it tough so it is really good to see the Premier giving them a helping hand. I am sure we are all in this together but sometimes I really wonder.

    1. You should be watching the Le Tour, with all the scenery and stuff it is just like being in France, oh I forgot you were going to be there weren't you. And good luck to your brother in getting home to Tassie.
