Blog Day 165 - 05 September 2020

First reports coming out about protests being held at the Shrine, not much detail as yet.  At 12.15pm the Herald Sun has said that there were thousands of demonstrators at the Shrine with dozens arrested and the Age has reported 200 demonstrators attending the Shrine, AAP has reported 100 people at the Shrine and 10 arrests.  A bit of a discrepancy there, I daresay as the day develops more accurate figures will become available.  Even if it was 100 or 200 attending that is still too many.

Most of us are now waiting patiently for the premier to announce his 'road map' for the state tomorrow.  Lets hope that the behaviour of the few protesters doesn't jeopardise any plan to relax the current stage four restrictions.  And let's not forget that whatever the 'road map' is we still have stage four restrictions to at least Sunday 13 September.

Although the new infection figures over the last couple of days haven't been disastrous they haven't been coming down as quickly as what the government and their advisers would like.  On 31/8 we had a drop in daily new infections from 114 to 73 and since then the lowest new infection reported has been 70 with a peak of 113.  We seem to be stuck on the 70 to 80 range of daily infections, based on previous figures we should be due for another major step down in the daily number.

Today Victoria reported 76 new infections for the last 24 hours and 81 for the day before. On 4/9 Victoria reported 59 deaths however only 9 of those were in the previous 24 hours with 50 reported as occurring previously but only just now being reported and/or recorded.  Today we have reported 11 deaths but of those 6 occurred in the last 24 hours and 5 occurred prior but recently (whatever that means).  Not much confidence in the accuracy of these figures at the moment.  Anyway, according to the government figures there are 298 Victorians in hospital due to the virus, 21 in ICU and 15 on respirators.  In what appears to be promising figures the hospital numbers are continuing to decline.

No good news in the worldwide figures, nearly 320,000 infections reported in the last 24 hours.  This is the highest daily new infection figure since I have been keeping figures on 8th July.  There were nearly 5,700 deaths reported worldwide in the last 24 hours which is in line with previously reported recent figures.

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: Keep your aluminium foil hat on, please don't go to the beach, to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no, remain vigilant, act responsibly, apologise if you are wrong, use Zoom to keep in touch, put your bins out before curfew, don't smoke around your baby, keep your eye on the ball and be kind.
