Blog Day 169 -10 September 2020

Well, I finished my first box of face masks the other day, that is 50 down and how many more to go, anybody's guess!

Just waiting for my 11.00pm webinar with the AWM to begin.  Today's session is titled VP Day and the end of WWII.  I recently attended the AWM webinar on the Korean War and it was very well done.  The webinar went for an hour, in the first half hour one of the AWM historians spoke about the conflict and Australia's role and the in the second half hour one of the curators presented and spoke about some artefacts from AWM collection relating to that conflict.

Later this afternoon my U3A (Maritime and Military History) group is holding its first zoom session and at the same time there is a Shrine Volunteer zoom meeting.  Busy, Busy, Busy.

If it wasn't so serious this would be funny.  Apart from the premier saying he is responsible for anything and everything that happens in the state etc blah blah blah, nobody is taking responsibility for the introduction of the curfew.  The police has said it wasn't their idea and they didn't request it, although they are happy for it to be there as it helps them in their job.  The health department has said although the order was issued under their auspices they didn't request it either. So if it was the premier's call whose idea was it?

Today's figures are looking a bit better so maybe the curfew is working, well done Mr Premier.  Victoria recorded 51 new infections for the last 24 hours compared to 76 the day before. We reported 7 deaths bringing the state total to 701 and the national total to 788.  We currently have 169 Victorians in hospital with corona virus and 17 in ICU.  The hospital figures continue to drop.

The rolling 14 day average for the state today is 75 (70 metro and 5 regional).  Looking for between 30 and 50 for metro.

The worldwide daily figures are up and down like a bride's nightie so difficult to draw any meaningful conclusions from them.  In the last week the daily new infections have ranged between 204,000 and 320,000 and the daily deaths have ranged between 9,400 and 4,000.

With the weekly figures there has been mixed results for the big four, as I like to call them, USA, Brazil, Mexico and India.  The USA reported 259,000 new infections down from 290,000 the week before and 5,300 deaths, down from 6,300 the week before, so that is looking promising.  Brazil reported 198,000 new infections down from 279,000 the week before and 4,800 deaths, down from 6,000 the week before, also promising.

Mexico is marking time with slight reductions in infection and death rates, new infections 36,800 (37,400) and deaths 3,200 (3,800).  Last week's figures in brackets.

India is still reporting significant increases on a week to week basis. India reported 614,000 new infections for the week compared to 541,000 for the previous week and 7,700 deaths for the week compared to 6,900 the week before. Not looking to good there.

In Europe the UK, Spain and France all reported significant increases in the number of infections.  In the last week the UK went from 9,900 new infections the previous week to 16,000 in the current week, Spain 53,000 to 64,000 and France 39,000 to 51,000.

European death rates have gone up a little with Spain reporting 434 deaths which is an increase on 223 reported the previous week.  The UK and Italy reported 80 deaths for the week and France 108.

Worldwide there were 1,800,000 new infections and 37,700 new deaths reported.  Total number of deaths worldwide 867,000.

Corona Virus International Stats as at 10/09/2020

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: Don't give up, keep your aluminium foil hat on, please don't go to the beach, to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no, remain vigilant, act responsibly, apologise if you are wrong, use Zoom to keep in touch, put your bins out before curfew, don't smoke around your baby, keep your eye on the ball, watch the averages and be kind.
