Blog Day 183 - 24 September 2020

A dairy cow walked into a bar and said "it is friesian out there" and the publican said "where is your jersey"?

A couple of my regular readers who hail from FNQ have been regaling us southerners of their exploits in the Cairns sunshine and how they are out and about doing dangerous things like drinks with friends and dining out.  Anyway out of pity they have shouted me a bottle of vodka - thanks Flashy and Lady P.

It was actually a double treat as I got a bottle of vodka and I had an outing to Dan's to collect it.  That's the Murphy Dan not the premier Dan.

Although all the daily figures for Victoria and Nationally are still to be updated it would appear that Victoria recorded 12 new virus infections in the last 24 hours but it appears that there has been a reclassification of 7 previously reported infections which means that there was a net increase of 5 for the state.  There were 2 deaths recorded in Victoria in the last 24 hours resulting in a total of 773 corona virus deaths for the state to date.  There are 67 Victorians in hospital with the virus and of those 8 are in intensive care and 6 are on ventilators.

And now to the all important 14 day rolling average;

23/09: Metro 29.4, Regional 1.1, Total 30.5
24/09: Metro 26.7, Regional 1.1, Total 27.8

Although these figures are looking good the premier has already warned us not to get our expectations to high for the relaxation of the lockdown on Sunday.

And now to the worldwide figures.  The number of virus infections increased by 2,058,697 in the last week and there was a further 36,572 deaths.  By way of comparison in the week ending 13/08 there was a further 1,821,353 infections and 41,191 deaths.  So currently worldwide weekly infections are up and deaths are down.

I have done some comparisons to the figures for some of the main players using the current weekly numbers and the numbers for the week ended 13/08.  In the last week the USA recorded 312,000 new infections compared to 387,000.  Deaths for the week have dropped from 7,500 to 5,700.

In Brazil the number of infections per week has declined from 308,000 to 206,000 and deaths 6,900 to 4,900.  Mexico's number of new infections have declined from 42,000 to 29,000 this week and deaths from 5,000 to 2,700 this week.

The big loser in this group is India.  India reported 432,000 new infections and 6,400 deaths for the week 13/08.  This week India reported 614,000 new infections and 8,000 deaths for the week.  I would think that given the time lapse of deaths to new infections that India will continue to report increased deaths for some time, even if they get the new infections under control.

And now to Europe.  For the week ended 13/08 the UK reported 6,600 new infections and for the current week the UK reported 32,000 new infections.  As at 13/08 the UK reported 342 deaths for the week but since then they got their weekly death rate down as low as 49, but for the last week they reported 178 deaths for the week.

Spain's figures are even more disastrous than the UK's.  Spain has gone from 24,000 new infections in the week ended 13/08 to 79,000 this week.  Their deaths have gone from 80 for the week to currently 791 for the week.

France has demonstrated similar figures with an increase in weekly infections from 13,000 to currently 77,000.  Deaths in France have risen from 66 for the week ended 13/8 to 414 for the current week.

These three countries all had this virus under control as we can see from the figures as at 13/8, but they relaxed their internal regulations, opened up the borders and look what has happened.  Maybe this is the price to pay for trying to get your community and economy back to normal, but is it too big a price?  Is the sacrifice worth the benefit?

Anybody considering a holiday in Europe yet???

Corona Virus International Stats as at 24/09/2020

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2 week extension remembers.

Remember: to follow the legal instructions of a police officer, not to get carried away with false optimism (again), if you are going to run a road block do it when it is raining, tell the truth, don't go to any protests, avoid the City of Casey, ring before you dig, especially if it is a $7 billion project, keep up the exercise - it is good for you.

It is a bit after 3.00pm and I have just finished a Shrine volunteer zoom meeting so it is time for my walk, see yo all tomorrow.
