Blog Day 188 - 29 September 2020
A horse walked into a bar and the barmaid said "why the long face"?
The lawn mowing man turned up today, so we can get the lawns mowed, the dog trimmed and I still can't get a haircut!
I have just finished the regular Tuesday morning Shrine volunteer Zoom meeting. For this meeting we usually watch movie or a documentary or a TV show prior to the meeting and it makes a basis for the discussion. What we watch usually has some military, historical or research based relevance. For this morning's meeting we had watched the SBS TV show, Who Do You Think You Are, in this case the episode featuring Bert Newton.
Bert's father was a WW2 veteran who returned from the war and was discharged on medical grounds from the army in December 1943. The father suffered from ongoing attacks of malaria that he had picked up in New Guinea and was also 'pretty crook' with bad nerves. This would most likely today be diagnosed as PTSD. Bert's father died in 1950 when Bert was 12 years old.
As usual the discussion ranged widely, not just about the military aspects of the program but also about researching family histories and the discovery of family secrets and things that may have been better left undiscovered.
Next week's movie, at my suggestion and later insistence, is one of the greatest movies of all time, starring Stanley Baker & Michael Caine, the blockbuster Zulu. Should lead to some interesting discussion.
Not much more to write about today as I have to get on with drafting and preparing the questions for this weeks trivia quiz. As each week goes by the production bar is being set higher and higher, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Therefore so as not to appear as some sort of technical troglodyte I have to put more and more effort into creating the bestest trivia quiz of all time. At least it is preventing my Powerpoint skills from getting too rusty.
Although the daily number of infections in Victoria for the last 24 hours was higher than the previous day the overall trend is pleasingly downward. Victoria reported 10 new infections for the previous 24 hours and 7 new deaths. The total number of deaths in Victoria is now 794 and 882 Australia wide. The number of Victorians in hospital due to the virus also continues to decline and now stands at 46, with 5 in intensive care and 4 on ventilators.
The rolling 14 day average continues to decline but remember we need to get this below 5 for the state before we can move to step 3 of the lifting of the restrictions.
28/09: Metro 20.3, Regional 0.6, Total 20.9
29/09: Metro 18.6, Regional 0.2, Total 18.8
Nearly 240,000 new infections reported worldwide in the last 24 hours and 3,700 deaths.
