Blog Day 195 - 06 October 2020

A dermatologist walked into a bar and asked the barmaid if she made cocktails, she said yes but that she would have to "start from scratch".

I see that Paris and parts of France are going back into a partial lockdown.  Bars in Paris are closing for 2 weeks and restaurants can only operate within certain parameters. Not much point going to Paris with the bars closed and restaurants restricted in their operations.

I think that I saw somewhere that the UK is going to reinstate some restrictions on hospitality and entertainment venues to cut their 2nd wave short.  The UK is also experiencing it's own problems with contact tracing with apparently thousands of people not followed up or contacted due to an old version of a spreadsheet being used.  At least they weren't using an old version of a whiteboard like what was being used in Victoria.

A café worker in Kilmore has tested positive due to contact with an infected person from the Chadstone cluster.  The café now has to be closed for at least a fortnight for cleaning and the staff self quarantined.  Apparently the infected person who maybe a "superspreader" may have travelled as far as Benalla whilst infectious.

I have just finished my Shrine volunteer Zoom meeting in which amongst other things we discussed the movie Zulu, which was my choice.  It was an interesting discussion with lots of differing views and opinions of the movie.  The idea of discussing a movie is not so much whether you like it or not but to provide a starting point for the meeting's discussion.  Today's discussion ranged around various aspects of British colonialism, the relationship of the Zulu wars to the Boer wars, how different the movie would be if it was made today and discussions about the uniforms and equipment of the time etc.

In the Shrine Galleries we have a colonial Red Coat uniform and pith helmet very similar to that worn by the British at Rorkes Drift and by the magic of the internet we were able to have a look at that display whilst discussing it.  We also discussed how we use these items when we are taking school groups around the Shrine.

The figures for the last 24 hours are out.  Victoria reported 15 new infections for the last 24 hours up from 9 the day before, this is not good news.  We reported 1 death bringing the state total to 807 and the national total to 895.  We have 21 Victorians in hospital due to the virus and this is down from 30 the day before, so this is good news.  There is only one Victorian in ICU due to the virus.

Rolling 14 day average;

5/10: Metro 11.6, Regional .2, Total 11.8
6/10: Metro 10.6, Regional .3, Total 10.9

Worldwide the infection and death figures are following the usual pattern of increasing numbers from the weekend lows.  Overall there is no meaningful reduction in either the infections or deaths world wide.

I am wondering how many people catch malaria and die from it each day or one of the other big worldwide killers, say even the flu, car accidents maybe.  Might be worthwhile having a look at that one day when I've got a bit of spare time.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2nd step restrictions remembers.

Remember: if you are doing anything wrong don't get caught, it could cost you $5,000!; you gotta wear a face mask no more face shields - thems the rules; somebody somewhere is testing your poo!; do not under any circumstances annoy a Cassowary; if you need a boost to your morale watch Zulu; keep to your 5km zone and if that doesn't include a beach don't go to the beach.
