Blog Day 205 - 17 October 2020

I walked into a bar the other day (if only) and said to the publican "I hate my car keys" and she said "why do you hate your car keys"? and I said "because they are always trying to start something"!

During my round up of significant sporting events yesterday I forgot to mention the Bathurst 1000 motor car race.  Although it is traditionally held in Bathurst in NSW (hence the name) it was always a big event on the local sporting calendar in that it was always a good excuse for another barbie.  Imagine, back in the good old days, going to a mate's place and watching car racing for 8 or 10 hours having a few shandies, because it always seemed like a hot day, and then jumping in your car and driving home.

This year's Bathurst is being held tomorrow and the forecast is for heavy rain which should make for an interesting race.  Of course with the virus restrictions there is no crowd there so none of the traditional crowd camped on the mountain.  This race has lost a lot of it's allure since the glory days of the Ford, Holden competition and drivers of the like of Brockkie and Moffatt.

Richmond won it's preliminary final in the AFL last night by 6 points in a bit of a nail biter finish.  They will play the winner of tonight's game between Brisbane and Geelong at next week's grand final.  For those of you living in isolation next week's grand final will be played at the GABBA in Brisbane, the first time ever it will be played out of Melbourne.

Now, pop this in your "give an inch take a mile" file.  The first flights arrived in Sydney from New Zealand yesterday under the new "bubble" arrangements.  Under these arrangements New Zealanders can travel to limited parts of Australia without undergoing 14 days quarantine on arrival.  Victoria is not one of those states that they can travel to.  Yesterday after arriving in Sydney 17 travellers from NZ promptly, somehow, got themselves on a flight to Melbourne and as there was nobody at the airport with the authority to detain them they immediately debunked. And a bit like Banjo's Clancy "we don't know where they are".  Once again nobody seems to be taking any responsibility for this cock up as can be seen in this quote from today's Age newspaper.

Border Force refused to comment on the matter, directing The Age and Sydney Morning Herald to state authorities.

Spokeswomen for the Victorian government directed any queries about the matter to the DHHS.

A spokeswoman for Melbourne Airport said it had also been unable to reach the Victorian DHHS to understand the situation and were therefore unable to comment.

A Victoria Police spokesperson declined to comment, stating the force had no jurisdiction over travellers at the airport.

The NSW government, the federal government and Sydney Airport have been contacted for comment

Despite ourselves we had  a couple of good days with the figures.  In the last 24 hours Victoria reported 1 new infection and no deaths, in the previous 24 hours we had 2 new infections and also no deaths.  Victoria currently has 13 people in hospital due to the virus and none in ICU.

The rolling 14 day average;

16/10: Metropolitan 8.7, Regional .6, Total 9.3
17/10: Metropolitan 8.5, Regional .6, Total 9.3

Unfortunately the international figures show no indication of any decline with more than 6,600 deaths in the previous 24 hours.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2nd step restrictions remembers.

Remember: if you are doing anything wrong don't get caught, it could cost you $5,000!; you gotta wear a face mask no more face shields - thems the rules; somebody somewhere is testing your poo!; do not under any circumstances annoy a Cassowary; if you need a boost to your morale watch Zulu; keep to your 5km zone and if that doesn't include a beach don't go to the beach; try not to commit perjury (allegedly); to vote if you don't want a fine, show true grit, tell your children not to get involved in politics, it might be time to get excited over the idea of the a shop bought coffee, if you are going to a Bathurst day barbie don't drink and drive.

Comments

  1. I was about to reprimand you for not mentioning Bathurst yesterday. Every year this is my weekend to ignore everyone and everything and sit in front of the tellie.
Beginning to think you should move back to Tassie before you all end up in a home for Victorian cannot remember/dunno who is responsible patients.

    1. Thank goodness I remembered to mention Bathurst, I would hated to have been reprimanded on my own blog.
