Blog Day 208 - 20 October 2020

The iso hair photos yesterday elicited some comments from regular readers some of which were nearly complimentary and some definitely weren't.  I will check out the barber shop on my walk today and if not too busy I will pop in for a trim.  Returned from my walk and still a dozen or so scruffy blokes outside the barber shop, will still leave it for another day or so.

I've got two zoom meetings to attend today.  At 11.00am this morning I have the regular Shrine volunteer meeting.  Today we are discussing the ABC show "Further Back in Time for Dinner" the 1940's episode.  If you haven't seen this show, a real Australian family live life as it would have been in a previous decade.  The 1940's episode was chosen as it included the 2nd world war years and all that entailed, including rationing, home vegie gardens, internment of the father as an enemy alien (Italian), son in the services, daughter working for the land army etc.  It was interesting but I found the family a bit irritating and the host Annabelle Crabbe very irritating.

The second zoom meeting today is at 7.00pm this evening and is a presentation by Military History and Heritage Victoria.  The title of tonight's presentation is "Dark Secrets: The True Story of Murder in HMAS Australia".  Sounds like something from an Agatha Christie novel.  This is the story of a murder on HMAS Sydney in 1942 during the 2nd world war.

Apart from the criminal aspects of the murder there were political issues as well.  As the Royal Australian Navy had been placed under the control of the Royal Navy at the start of the war, the murderers were subject to British law which included the death penalty for murder.  The death penalty only applied for treason under Australian military law.  The Australian government wasn't happy about having the death penalty applied on one of its ships. This appears to be an unintended consequence of placing the RAN under British control.  So should be an interesting presentation.

The Victorian (and Australian) virus figures continue to be encouraging.  Victoria has recorded either one or two new infections in the last 24 hours.  One of the infections is under investigation as it could be a remnant from a previous infection.  No deaths recorded in Victoria in the last 24 hours and there are 11 Victorians in hospital due to the virus and none in ICU.

The more mathematically astute of you will notice that the carried forward figures and the new figures often don't balance, which irritates the heck out of me.  I think that the reason for this is that often the figures are updated in the media and the government websites at different times each day and also there is often reclassifying and recounting that results in adjustments being made to the totals. Just got to live with it I suppose.

The rolling 14 day average is continuing to decline, as per below;

19/10: Metro 7.2, Regional .5, Total 7.7
20/10: Metro 6.4, Regional .4, Total 6.8

Still no good news on the world front, 380,000 new infections in the last 24 hours and 4,700 deaths.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 3rd step restrictions remembers;

Remember: we still can't walk into a bar and get a beer; no matter how hard we try sometimes the figures just don't add up.
