Blog Day 216  - Thursday 29 October 2020

O, how I long for the good old days of lockdown.  This morning at 8.45am it took me three cycles of the traffic lights to do a right hand turn from East Boundary Road into Centre Road.

Victoria recorded 3 new infections in the last 24 hours an increase from 2 the previous day.  All of these 3 are from groups already in isolation.  By way of comparison NSW recorded 5 new infections in the last 24 hours, one of these was a returned traveller already in hotel quarantine, the other 4 are community infections including 2 from an "Irish" school.  Looks like NSW is having the same issues with the Irish community that we are having here.

No new deaths in Victoria or nationally in the last 24 hours, to date Victoria has recorded a total of 819 deaths, NSW 53 and nationally 907.  Out of 15 Australians in hospital nationally there are 5 Victorians in hospital with no Victorians in ICU.

Rolling 14 Day Average:

28/10: Metro 2.7, Regional 0, Total 2.7
29/10: Metro 2.4, Regional 0, Total 2.4

Worldwide figures are still increasing with 505,000 new infections in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of infections worldwide to 44,740,000.  Worldwide there were 7,255 deaths in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of deaths worldwide to 1,179,000.

In the last week there were 3,278,000 new infections worldwide compared to the previous week's figure of 2,740,000.  In the last week there were 43,000 new deaths reported compared to the previous week's figure of 40,000.  No good news here, whilst the new infection figures increase the death figures will be sure to follow.

The big four, USA, Brazil, Mexico and India reported 1,076,953 new infections in the last week being 33% of the world total, the previous week they reported 1,091,272 new infections being 40% of the world total.  The decrease in these figures is due to India's new infections for the week decreasing by 66,000.  The other three of these countries reported increases in the weekly infections with the USA reporting 534,000 new infections an increase from 438,000 the previous week.  Brazil and Mexico reported far smaller increases from the previous week of 10,000 and 5,000 respectively.

These four countries reported 15,553 deaths for the week being 36% of the total worldwide deaths down from 17,103 deaths the previous week being 43% of the total.

Now for the UK, Spain, Italy and France and boy are these countries in some trouble.  Last week's figures are in brackets.  These four countries reported 719,000 (499,000) new infections for the week being 22% (18%) of the world total.  They reported 5,427 (3,510) deaths for the week being 13% (9%) of the world total.

The UK reported 153,000 (135,000) new infections for the week, Spain 148,000 (109,000), Italy 140,000 (77,000), France 278,000(178,000).

The UK reported 1,517 (1,003) new deaths for the week, Spain 1,100 (953), Italy 1,073 (543) and France 1,737 (1,011).

Given the rate at which the new infections are rising in these and other European countries they must expect significant increases in the number of deaths as the new infections work there way through the population.

Excluding the micro nations Peru seems to have hit the lead in deaths per million population.  Peru has a population of 33,000,000 and has had 895,000 infections, 34,000 deaths for 1,036 deaths per million.  By way of comparison the USA currently has 704 deaths per million and Spain 755.

Every now and again I like to have a look at a couple of countries whose virus statistics I find interesting.  Today I am going to look at Nigeria and Jordan.

Nigeria - total population 208,000,000 - Total infections 64,000 - Total deaths 1,139
Jordan - total population 10,000,000 - Total infections 62,000 - Total deaths 700

So here are two countries with huge differences in population, I am assuming huge differences in health facilities and levels of community hygiene and yet they have very similar numbers of infections and both have reasonable similar  extremely low numbers of deaths

And now the stage 4 lockdown 3rd step restrictions remembers;

Remember: we still can't walk into a bar and get a beer; no matter how hard we try sometimes the figures just don't add up; if you are subpoenaed to produce documents to produce all of them!; to gamble responsibly; don't take your eyes off the ball; keep your visitor log book; don't hang around smoking outside a cafe; don't travel to Peru.
