Blog Day 129 - 11 November 2020 - Remembrance Day
Apologies for no blog yesterday but my NBN connection was absent for nearly 24 hours. I was able to maintain some comms by using my phone data connected to my PC but that chewed up the data a pretty quick rate and I wasn't sure how long I was going to be without the NBN.
As you can see from today's heading and you probably realised anyway today is Remembrance Day. At 11.00am in the morning of the the 11th of November 1918 the armistice took effect to end the fighting on the Western Front in Europe that effectively ended The Great War (TGW).
This year is also 75th anniversary of the end of the 2nd World War.
So what used to be Armistice Day morphed into Remembrance Day to be inclusive of all military service, not just service in TGW.
A very different Remembrance Day from previous years. In a normal year I would have been volunteering at the Shrine for the Remembrance Day service and we would have had about 6,000 or so visitors including over 1,000 students at the service and doing tours on the day. This year due to corona virus restrictions there wasn't a public service at the Shrine although there was a virtual service conducted which was very nicely done and is available on Youtube for those of you who maybe interested.
And of course who could forget the other two great events of 11/11. The first being the hanging of Ned Kelly on 11/11/1880, and as Ned said, "such is life". And then on 11/11/1975 we saw the sacking of prime minister Gough Whitlam, possibly Australia's worst prime minister, he should of said such is life and got on with his.
We have now experienced our 12th zero - zero day in Victoria, this was a result of nearly 20,000 new testing results in Victoria in the last 24 hours. Australia wide there were 8 new virus infections 7 of which were related to returned overseas travellers. Of 77 active virus cases Australia wide there are 4 in Victoria (2 of which are in hospital) and 26 in NSW.
Victoria rolling 14 day average;
10/11: Metro .3, Regional .0, Total .3
11/11: Metro .3, Regional .0, Total .3
The Federal health minister has announced today that a deal has been done that could see a vaccine available in Australia in March. That is good news.
No good news worldwide with 533,000 new infections on 10/11 and 550,000 on 11/11. There were 7,600 deaths on 10/11 and over 10,000 on 11/11. I thought that Sleepy Joe was going to fix this once he got elected!

And now the Towards Covid Normal remembers;
Remember: Keep wearing your mask!; remember to remember Remembrance Day;.
Historic rankings of prime ministers eh?
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to say Scullin didn't do a great job re: the Great Depression - Holt was depressed and I feel that may have affected his performance, then you have McMahon - remember him? Yeah, no one else does either, and those who do try really hard to forget. But for my money we have to put Abbott into the conversation - I think he forgot that when you become PM you actually have to lead, it's all well and good to criticize the leader, but you need a new game plan when you actually become the leader. I guess he brought back Knights and Dames, oh, and then Knighted Prince Philip - history will look back at that as a huge achievement...
So yeah, I think you missed a few in your worst PM list.
Andrew, you had to go back to 1929 to find a dud Labor politician. Were you sleeping through the Rudd - Gillard - Rudd years? And what about that great leader - Paul Keating? I will concede on McMahon but I think that Holt would have been a good PM if he hadn't defected to China in that Chinese submarine. Anyway in a list of dud Australian PMs Whitlam is still head and shoulders above the rest. Although there is an ever diminishing group of fellow travellers who may disagree with me.
DeleteIsn't politics wonderful. What a great way to start a war. Abbott is certainly in among the group but I also have a little bit of money on Howard. Whilst at the time he was portrayed as a great money man and splashed millions I think our economy changed for the worst. And then the Libs wheel him out each year as the messiah and I think wow, time to get a new mascot I think. But today's blog is about Corona the virus with a touch of remembrance because it is a special day that we should never forget. Donald can still win (well according to him anyway).
ReplyDeleteAs always Richard, thank you for your contribution. I note that the TAB still hasn't called the presidential election yet and my $10 bet on Mr President Trump is still pending. And how about Pfilzer announcing the discovery of the virus vaccine after the election......conspiracy anyone???
