Blog Day 144 - Thursday 26 November 2020

Day 27: Zero - Zero
Day 3 : Zero - Zero - Zero

Twenty eight days of zero - zero = eradication of the virus in the community (for the time being).

When Victoria achieved zero new cases, zero active cases and zero deaths on Tuesday it was the first time that milestone had been reached since February 29.

Australia wide there was one new case reported in the last 24 hours and that was in SA and wasn't a returned traveller, investigations are under way to track the source.  Victoria received the results of 12,900 tests in the last 24 hours, NSW 14,900 and Qld 5,216.  There are currently 85 active cases in Australia, 56 of those are returned overseas travellers.

Worldwide the infection figures and death figures continue to rise.  In the last week there were 4,157,000 new infections an increase from 4,126,000 the week before.  Total infections to date worldwide are 56,544,000.  There were 72,000 deaths worldwide for the week an increase from 65,000 the week before with a total of 1,426,000 deaths worldwide due to the pandemic.

The USA, Brazil, Mexico and India all reported increases in the number of infections for the week with mixed results for the number of deaths.  The USA reported 1,267,000 new infections, compared to 1,164,000 the previous week.  The USA also reported 12,000 deaths for the week a significant increase on 9,000 reported the week before.  This would appear to be the highest weekly death figure in the US since at least early Ausgust.

Brazil reported 219,000 new infections, an increase on 198,000 reported the previous week, they also reported 3,300 deaths which is less than the previous week's figure of 4,100.  Mexico reported 49,000 new infections for the week, a significant increase on the previous week's infection figure of 33,000.  Mexico reported 3,700 deaths for the week, again an increase on the previous week's figure of 3,200.

India reported 309,000 new infections for the week compared to 274,000 the week before.  India also reported 3,600 deaths which is less than the previous week's death figure of 3,500.  India's death rate has been declining weekly and significantly since early October.

There has been some big movements in the European infection figures for the week and I am not sure how accurate they are, we will need to see if they are reflected in next week's figures.

The UK reported 127,000 new infections for the week, down from 174,000 the week before.  This is a remarkable reduction in new infections so either the new lockdown is working extraordinarily well or there is an aberration in the numbers.  The UK reported 3,300 deaths for the week, a slight increase from the previous week's figure of 2,900.

Spain's infection rate increased slightly to 80,000 new infections for the week an increase from 79,000 the previous week.  Spain reported 2,000 deaths for the week, again a small in increase from 1,900 the previous week.

Italy reported a significant decrease in the number of infections for the week with 209,000 reported this week and 244,000 reported last week.  Italy reported 4,800 deaths for the week, compared to 4,300 for last week.

France, like the UK, has reported a significant reduction in the new infections for the week with 105,000 new infections.  This is down from 200,000 new infections the previous week.  This is either a great result from the current lockdown or there is some issue with the figures being reported, lets hope that is the as a result of the lockdown.  France also reported 3,900 deaths a small decrease from 4,200 the previous week.

The USA, Brazil, Mexico and India reported 44% (40%) of all new infections for the week and 32% (30%) of the deaths.  Last week's figures in brackets.

The UK, Spain, Italy and France reported 13% (17%) of all new infections for the week and 19% (20%) of the deaths.

So these eight countries between them reported 57% (57%) of the new infections for the week and 51% (50%) of the deaths for the week.

And now the Towards Covid Normal remembers;

Remember: Wear your mask when you are buying your Bunnings sausage; no holidays in Britain for a while yet; be careful planning your computer upgrades (my most recent upgrade cost me $1,400).
