Blog Day 186 - Thursday 07 January 2021

Due to various interruptions it has been a few weeks since I had a look at the international figures, so I will try and have a look at them today.

First up lets have a look at what has been happening closer to home in Victoria and nationally.  In the last 24 hours Victoria recorded zero new infections and 3 the day before, there were eight new cases recorded Australia wide in the last 24 hours, 6 of those in NSW, however all of these were returned overseas travellers.  There has also been one locally acquired case reported in Qld, possibly a worker from one of the quarantine hotels.

These results were from nearly 33,000 tests results reported in Victoria in the last 24 hours and over 37,000 test results reported in the day before.  Victoria has tested and reported the results of nearly 103,000 tests in the last three days.  This is a phenomenal result both medically and logistically.  Well done all those concerned.

Currently Victoria has 38 active cases, 13 of which are returned overseas travellers.  NSW has 196 active cases, not including 76 returned overseas travellers.  Nationally there are 298 active cases not including the 76 returned overseas travellers in NSW.

There is some nervousness in both the Federal government and the state governments about the new virulent strain of the virus currently circulating in the UK.  The national cabinet has met to discuss more stringent conditions to be applied to overseas travellers from the UK, including pre flight testing.

Due to my laxness over the last few weeks I have had some trouble extracting the figures to ensure some accuracy in the worldwide weekly figures.  What I have done is extract the total new infections and new deaths for the last three weeks (the weeks I have missed) and averaged these figures to present some sort of weekly figures.  So this weeks figures for new infections and new deaths worldwide is actually an average of the last three weeks figures.  (I promise I won't let this happen again).

Over the last 3 weeks worldwide there has been an average of 4.4 million new infections per week and 79,000 new deaths per week.  The worldwide figures are showing no significant sign of improvement.

The USA recorded a weekly average of 1.5m new infections and 18,500 new deaths for the last 3 weeks. On the week ended 17/12 the US reported 1.55m new infections and 17,700 deaths.  So no great improvement there.  Brazil has reported an average of 277,000 new infections and 5,100 new deaths over the last three weeks, a significant decrease in the number of infections but a small increase in the number of deaths.  Similarly Mexico has reported less infections at 71,000 per week but more deaths at 5,000 per week.  India has reduced its new infections from 192,000 on 17/12 to 147,000 this week and 3,100 deaths to 2,800 deaths.

No really good news in any of these figures but no dramatic increases either.  These four countries account for 45% of the new infections and 37% of the deaths worldwide compared to 40% and 37% on 17/12.

Now for the real bad news, the UK reported an average of 308,000 new infections per week for the last three weeks, up from 136,000 three weeks ago and nearly 3,000 deaths per week for the last 3 weeks.  Given the huge increase in infections I would expect the UK death rate to increase dramatically over the coming weeks.  No wonder they have gone into a significant lockdown again.

Spain has reported an increase in infections from 43,000 per week to 57,000 per week and an increase in deaths from 1,200 per week to 1,500 per week.  Italy and France reported small movements in weekly infections and likewise in weekly deaths.

The four European countries accounted for 13% of the new infections up from 7.5% three weeks ago and 14% of the new deaths down from 15%.

Again have again listed below the top countries by death per million with the figures and place in the table from three weeks ago in brackets.  It would appear that the Balkan countries have jumped a few places and Hungary has crept in at number 13.  (As usual I have excluded the micro countries and included Australia and New Zealand for comparison purposes).

  1. Belgium 1,707 (1   1,565) deaths per million of population
