Blog Day 292 - Wednesday 13 January 2021

 The Grand Prix organisation have announced that the Australian grand prix usually held in Melbourne in March has now been postponed to the weekend of 18 - 21 November and will be still held in Melbourne.  Instead of traditionally being the first race of the season it will now be the traditional 3rd last race of the season, for this year anyway.  This appears to be a very sensible decision.

I think that the Avalon air show is being held in November this year instead of the usual weekend in February.  Again a wise decision.

The tennis players and their entourages, all 1,200 of them, start to arrive in Melbourne tomorrow.  Some people are asking how we can bring all these people in to the city from all over the world, including virus hot spots, when Victorians trapped in NSW and Qld are unable to return to their own homes.  Good question I reckon.

Whilst on sporting matters, surprise, surprise the Indian cricket team are whinging about the standard of their hotel quarantine in Brisbane.

Just had a quick trip to Bunnings, my first since at least March last year and bought a heap of stuff I probably don't need and probably won't use.  I must admit Bunnings do some things very well (as a shareholder I must declare my interest in Wesfarmers, Bunnings parent company).  As I walked into the shop the nice young lady at the door offered me a free mask, I then realised that I hadn't put mine on.  As I had a mask in my pocket I didn't need the free one.  But what a nice way of handling the situation instead of "put your mask on" I got "would you like a mask", same outcome and no offence.  Well done Bunnings.

Victoria has clocked up 7 days of no new local infections.  In the last 24 hours Victoria reported three new infections who were ROTs.  NSW has reported 7 new infections 6 of whom are ROTs and one locally acquired case who is a child.  Qld has reported 2 new cases and NT 1, all are ROTs.  There were 13 new cases reported nationally, 12 of which are ROTs.

In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of nearly 18,000 tests, NSW and Qld 21,000.  These numbers are down a bit from the recent testing peaks of more than 30,000 per day in these states.

Currently Victoria has 35 active cases, 16 of which are ROTs, NSW has 191 active cases excluding 82 ROTs and Qld has 26 active cases all ROTs.

There are 45 people in hospital due to the virus Australia wide with none in hospital in Victoria.  There is one person in ICU nationally.

Worldwide the numbers are continuing their climb from the post weekend lows.  New infections in the last 24 hours totalled 685,000 bring the worldwide total for the pandemic to nearly 92 million.  There were 16,500 deaths reported in the last 24 hours for a total number of deaths worldwide of 1.969 million.

An epidemiologist on the radio this morning said that it will take two years for the vaccine program to take effect on the world wide virus figures.  Let's hope that he is wrong with that.

It is reported that the UK authorities are experiencing difficulty in enforcing their lockdown rules.  Get some Victorian coppers over there, they will fix that.  They will be booking little old ladies for sitting on park benches before you can say Robert Peel.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread; try not to spend too much at Bunnings.

Comments

  1. After a meeting this morning it has been decided that after 46 weeks off, we will attempt to restart playing indoor bowls again in February. Still required to have temp.checked, full sign in, use hand sanitiser regularly and sanitise all seats, tables, bowls etc. when finished. Hopefully all you mainlanders will not stuff this up.

    1. I might put together a team of coughing, spluttering, sore throated, touching everything Victorians and challenge you to a game of indoor bowls and as I am sure that I will be very good at it I will be team captain.
