Blog Day 298 - Tuesday 19 January 2021

Today it is 12 months since the health authorities in Australia publicly raised their concerns about this little thing called a Corona virus to be known as Covid 19.  This was probably the first time we heard of Brendan Murphy who was at the time the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer.  He was the first of a number of otherwise anonymous health bureaucrats who would become familiar to us over the coming months.

Little did we know at the time what a saga we would be heading out on.  The virus running rampant on cruise ships, closed international borders, lots of restrictions on day to day life that we never thought that we would experience in our lifetime, travel restrictions, curfews, shortages of toilet paper, 10s of millions of people being infected worldwide, over 2 million deaths and the infections and deaths continue seemingly unabated - the list goes on.  And who would have thought that 12 months later we would be still experiencing the effects of living with the virus.

And now for something a bit lighter. The ace tennis star Bernard Tomic and his "model & influencer" girlfriend Vanessa Sierra (has anybody ever heard of her?) are currently in hard lockdown which means that they cannot leave their hotel room for any reason at all for 14 days. Anyway one of Ms Sierra's complaints is that she cannot get her hair washed, I kid you not and I quote her below:

"This is the worst part of quarantine: I don’t wash my own hair,” Ms Sierra said.
I’ve never washed my own hair. It’s just not something that I do.
I normally have hairdressers that do it twice a week for me, so this is the situation that we’re dealing with … I can’t wait to get out of quarantine just so I can get my hair done — the simple luxuries in life.”

She also pointed out to us that she can't do poo poo in front of Bernard, and hasn't gone for 3 days, although she probably only eats lettuce leaves so there probably isn't much in there anyway.

Bernie and Vanny have been filling in their time playing video games which surprises me a little, I would have thought that Bernie would have taken the opportunity to finish reading War and Peace and Vanny would have been listening to Beethoven's 9th whilst discussing with Bernie which of democracy and Marxism will survive the 21st century.

Anybody want to hazard a guess as to how Bernie's and Vanny's hardships are being treated by the long suffering Victorian general public, not a lot of sympathy I reckon.

And now back to the real world, a world that the vacuous Bernie and Vanny would hardly realise exists.

Victoria reported 4 new cases in the last 24 hours all ROTs and 3 associated with the AO tennis players, NSW & Qld reported 2 and 3 new cases respectively, all ROTs and Australia wide there were 9 new cases, all ROTs.  There were the results of 15,600 tests reported in Victoria in the last 24 hours, 10,600 in NSW and 6,700 in Qld.

Currently there are 34 active cases in Victoria including 25 ROTs, 104 in NSW excluding 75 ROTs and 26 in Qld all ROTs.  There are a total of 195 active cases nationally 82 of which are ROTs excluding the 75 NSW ROTs.

I have access to some worldwide vaccination figures.  The following are the top 10 countries by numbers of vaccinations administered per 100k of population.  Of the 40 million plus doses administered worldwide Israel is the highest per 100k population, the US the highest with outright vaccinations and New Guinea is the lowest with 25 doses nationally.  Of course Australia is not on the scoreboard as yet as we haven't actually administered and vaccines as yet.

Due to having to copy and paste some tables etc into today's blog the formatting might be a bit skewwhiff, if so don't blame me - blame the blog.

  1. What a wonderful adjective you have chosen ...vacuous - having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence; mindless. From the Latin meaning empty. How absolutely appropriate and she's not the only one among the tennis players. I must use this more often.

    1. Thankyou, now I must find a reason to use my other favourite word "serendipitous".
