Blog Day 303 - Sunday 24 January 2021

At 12.13pm in the afternoon it is nearly 31 degrees celsius heading towards a forecast top of 36.  The lowest overnight temperature is forecast to only drop to 25 with a maximum of 40 forecast for tomorrow and back down to 23 for Tuesday, Australia day.

Was it Mr Carrier or Mr Westinghouse who invented air-conditioning, whichever it was we owe a huge debt of gratitude.

You may recall I attended a conference last night that was conducted in the UK.  It started 11.30am UK time which was 10.30pm here.  As the various attendees came on line they were commenting how cold it was in the UK and how much snow they were getting.  Amazing the difference a few thousand miles and a different hemisphere can make.

I made it through the morning session of the conference however I had to call it quits at lunch, 1.00am in the morning here.  The conference webcast will be available on line so I will be able to catch up in due course.

Tonight's session starts at 11.00pm this evening, I will see how far I get tonight.

Australia wide there has been four new cases reported, all ROTs with no new community infections.  Victoria reported one ROT infection, which makes 18 days of zero community infections for this state.  NSW reported 3 ROT infections and Qld had zero infections overall.

The number of tests has declined to nearly 12,000 in Victoria in the last 24 hours, 11,300 in NSW and only 4,600 in Qld.

Currently there are 127 active cases Australia wide of which 65 are ROTs plus the 66 ROTs in NSW not included in their figures.

Worldwide there were 556,000 new infections in the last 24 hours taking the worldwide figure for infections for the pandemic to over 99 million.  In the same 24 hours there were 12,500 deaths.

In the US the new infections and death figures declined slightly however it continues a pattern of gradual decline in their figures, it would be nice for that to continue.

On the other hand the UK figures have increased slightly for both new infections and deaths.

Listed below are the top 10 countries by vaccination per 100k of population.  Israel is top of the list with 40% of their population vaccinated.  The UK has vaccinated just over 9.3% and the US nearly 6%.  We haven't made it onto the top 10 yet, sorry, upon further investigation we haven't made it into the top 54.  We languish somewhere behind Ecuador who has vaccinated 108 Ecuadorians.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread; try not to spend too much at Bunnings; bowls is the only game where the players are allowed to have a bias; if you see a big hole, take a photo; vote 1 Trump in four years time; brighten up your day by patting a puppy; don't start lining up for your jab yet.

  1. It will be interesting to see when the vaccinations start to make a difference. Israel for example is starting to see a big drop in daily cases, however deaths there are still trending upwards. I expect we will see a pretty big drop in cases for them over the next week. Wonder how it will play out in the US, where they already have 8% at least of the pop infected and then 7% vaccinated. If you assume in some areas like NY where they think maybe 15% to 20% were infected, you'd only need 40-50% vaccinated to start to see pretty decent herd immunity. Fingers crossed we see big drops offs within the month.

    1. As at 25/1 both the US and UK were showing continuing declines in their daily infection and death rates, lets hope these figures are accurate and continue, or maybe they have just run our of vulnerable people for the virus to attack.
