Blog Day 309 - Saturday 30 January 2021

I see that the EU has approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for use adding it to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines now able to be used in most countries, if they can get it.  However, the lord giveth and the lord taketh away.  The EU has now imposed export bans on the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines preventing these companies providing their vaccines to countries outside of the EU until such time as the EU country's requirements have been met.

The EU has exempted 120 countries from this ban, Australia and the UK did not make the list of exempted countries.  I understand that the exempted countries are mainly poorer 3rd world countries.

I see that Serbia, amongst other vaccines, is also using a vaccine called 'Sputnik V'.  Although that might be a good name for a spaceship, is it a good name for a corona virus vaccine?  If Sputnik V becomes available in Australia I wonder how long the queues would be for that one.

Fortunately, given it might be a while before a vaccine is available in Australia I can report that Victoria has now recorded 24 days without a local transmission, 13 days in NSW and 19 days in Qld.  Who needs their cruddy vaccine anyway?

There were three new cases reported Australia wide in the last 24 hours, one in Victoria and 2 in NSW, all ROTs.

This was as a result of 13,700 tests in Victoria, 10,500 in NSW and nearly 6,200 in Qld.

There are 74 active cases Australia wide, 23 in Victoria, all ROTs, 26 in NSW plus 41 ROTs and 6 in Qld all Rots.

It is good to see the hospitalisation numbers continuing to drop with only 13 currently in hospital due to the virus.  This is down from 20 the day before and down from 48 on 16/1.  None of these 13 are in hospital in Victoria and there are none in ICU.

Worldwide the daily numbers seem to have stabilised with apparently only day to day fluctuations.  In the last 24 hours there were 575,000 new infections and 14,900 deaths.

In the US they reported 165,000 new infections in the last 24 hours, although this is 12,000 higher than the previous day the overall trend for new infections is gradually downwards.  The US reported 3,900 deaths in the last 24 hours and overall this figure appears to be stabilising.  Hopefully the downward trend in the new infections will eventually translate into a meaningful reduction in the daily number of deaths.

In the UK they reported 28,800 new infections in the last 24 hours and apart from daily fluctuations the daily trend in new infections in the UK is strongly down.  The UK reported 1,200 deaths in the last 24 hours and again these figures appear to be stabilising after significant increases in the death rate in early January.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread; try not to spend too much at Bunnings; bowls is the only game where the players are allowed to have a bias; if you see a big hole, take a photo; vote 1 Trump in four years time; brighten up your day by patting a puppy; don't start lining up for your jab yet; if it is 40 degrees where you are keep up your fluid intake, I know that I will be; if you venture outdoors take your umbrella; maybe avoid the Sputnik V vaccine.
