Blog Day 311 - Monday 01 February 2021

It looks like the curse of the Dark Times in Bentleigh East blog has struck again.  After rattling on yesterday about how well the states are doing with controlling local community virus transmissions WA announced that they have one case of a local transmission and is locking down 80% of the state population for 5 days.  Travel restrictions have been reimposed at various levels of severity by the other states.  Victoria and Tasmania have bought in an immediate block on all travel from the WA hotspots, except by application and approval of an exemption.  Qld & NT are insisting on anybody arriving from a WA hotspot goes into a 14 day quarantine.

The infected person was most working as a security guard in one of the quarantine hotels and, get this, also as an Uber driver.  About 60 close contacts of his have been identified and hopefully tested.

This is the first community transmission in WA for many months.

This is exactly what happened in Victoria, are these states, and their premiers, so arrogant that they refuse to learn from the mistakes of the other states.

It just goes to show that no matter how much we think that we have this under control and start to reopen state borders that the situation could change overnight or even within hours and a traveller could easily be trapped interstate again.

And now to today's figures.  Victoria has reported its 26th day of zero community transmissions and we had one infected ROT.  NSW had 6 new cases, all ROTs.  The new WA case hasn't appeared in the figures for that state as yet.  Overall Australia wide there were 7 new cases reported, all ROTs.

Victoria received the results of 10,600 tests in the last 24 hours, NSW 6,023 and Qld 3,759.  WA reported zero testing in the last 24 hours although I think that will change in the next 24 hours.

Victoria has 21 active cases, all ROTs, NSW has 17 active cases excluding 39 ROTs and QLD has 6 active cases also all ROTs.

Worldwide there were 412,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 9,600 deaths.  These numbers are down on previous days but are part of a pattern of underreporting over the weekend.  Any trend will show up as the week progresses.

I have changed the Australian/Victorian figures spreadsheet.  As there is little movement in the deaths and hospitalisation figures I have removed them and added columns showing the active cases and the movement in ROTs.  This is more meaningful at the moment.

I have also added a new spreadsheet showing the daily infection and death rates in the USA and UK.  I think that these two countries are a decent litmus test for whatever else is happening around the world.

I will try and sort out the formatting of these tables for tomorrow's blog, although I will be out for some of tomorrow so that might not happen.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember: to think carefully before mucking around with spreadsheets and table in Blogger.

  1. Ah - is it just me or is there a distinct lack of learning from previous outbreaks going on here. An Uber driver eh? What could possibly go wrong....

    1. You are correct, I see in today's news that the security staff dealing with the hotel quarantine inmates in WA didn't have to wear masks all the time. This is just premiers being pigheaded.
