Blog Day 314 - Thursday 04 February 2021

Once again my sister has helpfully pointed out that when I take a day off from the blog the world seems to go to hell in a handbasket.  So even though I have better things to do today I will do some sort of blog to avoid the possibly calamitous outcome if I don't make some sort of effort.

As at 9.00pm last night the good law abiding folk of Victoria were advised that there has been an escape of the virus from one of the AO quarantine hotels.  A worker in the hotel tested negative at the end of his shift however tested positive a couple of days later.  Naturally believing that he was negative he went about his daily business for a couple of days whilst possibly infectious but not showing any symptoms.  During this time he visited numerous public places such as a couple of Bunnings stores, cafes, gold driving ranges etc.  So far there has been no further transmissions detected from the breach of the hotel quarantine.

Hundreds, possibly thousands of people will have to be tested as a result of this one infectious person moving around the community and many of these will end up in quarantine for either 14 days or at least until they get the result of their tests which will hopefully be negative.  Once again the testing stations are overloaded with wait times of many hours or closing down due to reaching their limits.

As a result of this we have gone back to wearing masks at all times indoors, gatherings at private homes have been reduced from 30 people to 15 and the number of people attending their place of work has been held at 50% instead of increasing to 75% as was planned.

People are very angry about all of this given it has happened due to the AO's and the state of Victoria's insistence that we have to play some tennis games here.

Furthermore there has been a transfer of the virus within another of the quarantine hotels.  A family occupying a room at the hotel has somehow transferred the virus to the occupant of another room opposite.  The health authorities believe that the only way this happened was if both parties opened their doors at the same time to collect meals and there was some sort of transfer of the virus by aerosol.  More to come on this I daresay.

Lucky we have, as we are constantly reminded, a world class hotel quarantine system.  Now we have to trust that our "world class contact tracing system" is up to it.

Yesterday I received a newsletter from the Shrine outlining the program for the return to duty of the volunteers.  This program saw us doing some training through February and returning on a rostered basis on 20/02 and education tours training and tours from 22/02.  I am not sure if this will be affected by the current situation described above.

I reckon that I have done enough to avoid the curse of the blog (or no blog).  I will update local, national and international figures tomorrow, unless I get a better offer in the meantime.
