Blog Day 328 - Thursday 18 February 2020

Good news all round today, the latest round of covid lockdown ended at 11.59pm last night and Victoria has recorded zero new community infections in the last 24 hours and one new infection with a ROT in hotel quarantine.

The good news continues for the rest of the country, the new ROT infection reported in Victoria was the only new case Australia wide.  This outcome was from the receipt of just over 30,000 test results in Victoria in the last 24 hours and 21,000 test results in NSW.

Victoria has now gone two days with zero local infections, NSW 32 days and Qld 42 days.

Currently Victoria has 25 active virus cases including 9 ROTs, NSW zero active cases plus 26 ROTs and Qld has 6 active cases, all ROTs.  Australia wide there are 41 active virus cases including 25 ROTs plus NSW's 26 ROTs.

New Zealand reported a death in the last week, apparently a person had the virus some time ago, recently was admitted to hospital for an unrelated matter and died from complications caused by the virus.  Initially wasn't going to be reported as a virus related death, but is now included in their virus figures.

Continuing the good news there are very strong downward trends worldwide in both new infections and death numbers.  Worldwide there were 386,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, a week ago that figure was 473,000 and the week before that 483,000.  In the last 24 hours worldwide there were 11,000 deaths reported, a week ago that figure was 16,100 the the week before that 13,800.

The good news continues for the US and UK.  In the 24 hours of 17/02 the US reported 60,000 new infections, on 10/2 the US had 93,000 new infections and on 03/02 it had 111,000 new infections.  On 17/2 the US reported 1,600 deaths on 10/02 - 3,000 deaths and on 03/02 - 17,000 deaths.

The UK reported 10,600 new infections for the 24 hours of 17/02 and 12,000 for 10/02 and nearly 17,000 on 03/02. Similarly the UK reported 799 deaths for the 24 hours of 17/02, on 10/2 it reported 1,052 deaths and on 03/02 the US reported 1,451 deaths.

Now to the weekly worldwide figures.  For the first time, I think, all of the countries we have been following in detail have recorded declines, albeit some more than others, in new infections and deaths for the current week.  The combined world wide figures are also showing significant declines.

Worldwide 2.6 million new infections were reported compared to nearly 3 million the week before and 3.5 million the week before that.  There were 74,000 deaths reported for the week down from 89,000 the week before and 94,000 the week before that.

The US reported 552,000 new infections for the week down from 758,000 the previous week and reported 19,000 deaths for the week down from nearly 22,000 the week before.  Brazil reported 317,000 new infections and 7,200 deaths down from 323,000 and 7,400 respectively the week before.

Mexico reported 47,000 new infections for the week, down from 84,000 the week before, this seems to be too large a decrease to be accurate and maybe a glitch in the reporting, they reported 6,200 deaths for the week down from 10,000 the week before which also seems to be a bit large a decline to be accurate, time will tell.

India continues its downward trend with 78,000 new infections reported for the week down from 80,000 the week before, although not large declines they are regular and consistent.  India reported 639 deaths, down from 665 the week before.  India's figures are remarkable when you consider the population size, the overcrowding in it's major cities, the level of available health care to the majority of the population, the level of hygiene available to most of the rural folk and the low level of education of many of the poorer people.  In September last year India looked like the virus was going to get out of hand and run amok and then it stopped, almost turned on a dime and started to decline in both new infections and deaths and kept on declining.  Actually quite amazing, I wonder what their secret is.

The UK looks like it has things under control with constistent declines in new infection rates and death rates for a number of weeks now.  The UK reported 86,000 new infections for the week down from 113,000 the week before and 4,100 deaths down from 5,500 the previous week.

Spain, Italy and France all reported declines in the numbers of new infections and deaths, some more significant than others. Spain reported 86,000 new infections, down from 110,000 the week before and 2,600 deaths down from 3,300 the week before; Italy 83,400 new infections down from 84,500 and 2,200 deaths down from 2,500 the week before; France 129,000 new infections down from 134,500 and 2,700 deaths down from 2,850 the week before.

Although all of these figures look great we are still talking about new infections in the 10s of thousands in many countries worldwide each week and deaths in the thousands in many countries each week, still a long way to go.

The USA, Brazil, Mexico and India which accounts for 25% of the world population reported 38% of the new infections and 44% of the deaths for the week.

The UK, Spain, Italy and France which accounts for 3% of the world population reported 15% of the new infections and 16% of the deaths for the week.

Below are the top 22 countries listed by deaths per million, excluding the micro nations and including Australia and NZ for comparison purposes. Last week's position in brackets.

The top 5 countries on this list are the same as last week, the big mover is Portugal which has jumped from 11th position to 6th. A number of countries have moved up and down 1 or 2 places with often only a few deaths per million separating them.

Below is the table showing the top countries by percentage of population vaccinated.  Israel is still top of the list with 79% of the population vaccinated.  Of the larger countries the UK is next with nearly 24% and the US with nearly 18%.

Algeria has vaccinated 30 of their population, not 30% but 30 individuals, but don't laugh it is still 30 more than we have done!
