Blog Day 330 - Sunday 21 February 2021

I have been a little nervous yesterday and today, as you would have noticed there was no blog yesterday.  As has been pointed out to me in the past the 'curse of blog' usually strikes when I miss a day.  However if yesterday is any guide we appear to have beaten the curse.  In the last 24 hours there has not been a blowout in the number of infections, no grim reaper visiting old peoples homes (no more than usual anyway) and one person in Victoria admitted to ICU who is in a satisfactory condition.

The worse thing that happened in the last 24 hours was a schoolboy experiencing an outbreak of boils in Narre Warren South.

I had a day away from the blog control room yesterday.  I drove to Ballarat to attend a house auction.  This was a bankrupt's property that I had been involved with prior to my retirement and I was interested to see how the auction went.  The property was sold as vacant possession by the bankruptcy trustee and sold for well over the reserve, a good result for the creditors of the bankrupt estate.

After driving back to Melbourne I then visited some friends who were moving into their new house that they had recently purchased.  After a quick tour of the house and as they were in the middle of moving I got out of the way and headed for home.

Once I got home it was close enough to drinkies time, hence no blog.

Just when you think that the state government and the public service have got things under control another stuff up comes to light.  Remember when the hotel quarantine was introduced the premier told is that all internees would be charged for their quarantine costs, well you see this hasn't actually happened.

We were told yesterday that no invoices have been issued for the costs of hotel quarantine.  Apparently there isn't a process in place for issuing the invoices as yet.  The government and the people of Victoria are owed between $20 million and $45 million we don't even know how much is owed.

The minister who reported this (whose name I missed) said that nobody issues invoices over the christmas new year break and that they would get the invoices our sometime in due course.  I wish somebody had told my credit card company, various utilities, insurers etc that the government said that they don't have to issue invoices during this periond.

This would have to be the weakest excuse possible covering up for an inefficient and ineffective public service.  Maybe somebody in the public service should talk to somebody from MYOB, I reckon they would have invoices in the mail the next day.  (What's the betting we are trying to build a "rolled gold" invoicing program from the ground up).

Now, it is definitely dark days in Bentleigh with a tier three exposure site identified at the Coles Express in East Boundary Rd.  Apparently an infected person or persons attended this shop and service station last Thursday.  Tier three means that if you were there at the same time (which I wasn't) you need to get tested if you show symptons.  Woe is us.

In the last 24 hours Victoria reported zero new infections both local and ROTs, however a Victorian ROT has been admitted to hospital and is in a satisfactory condition in ICU.  NSW has reported 3 new infections, all ROTS, Qld zero for both and SA has reported 2 new infections, both ROTs.

In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 10,300 tests, NSW 13,600 tests and Qld 5,100 tests.

Currently there are 25 active cases in Victoria 6 of which are ROTs, zero local cases in NSW plus 29 ROTs and 5 active cases in Qld, all ROTs.

And hip hip hooray - we have made it onto the vaccination scoreboard with 20 completed jabs in NSW, however that still leaves us 10 behind Algeria.

A bit of a hiccough with the US figures for the last 24 hours, they have recorded 108,000 new infections in the last 24 hours.  Hopefully this is a statistical or counting glitch as this is up from 69,000 the day before. Alternatively somebody has found some boxes of uncounted virus results in a cupboard in a city hall somewhere, probably hidden next to all the uncounted votes for President Donald Trump.

The death figures in the US are continuing a downward decline, likewise the new infection and death figures in the UK.

Worldwide the figures continue to be promising although as I was working with two day's figures I had to juggle them a bit for them to make sense.  Over the last two days there was an average increase in the infection numbers of 411,000 and an average number of deaths for the two days of 9,800.

Covid Normal Reminders;

Remember: to think carefully before mucking around with spreadsheets and tables in Blogger; to keep up your Covid era exercise regime; if you put your mask on when you enter a shop you can take it of again when you leave ( I seem to get home and realise I still have my mask on); to laugh at my jokes; it is a beautiful day out there, get out and enjoy it; keep your corporate governance up to date; bring yourself up to date with the stage 4 lockdown rules; to buy your valentine day flowers before lockdown; those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones; even in lockdown look both ways before you cross the road; to enjoy our refound freedoms, while they last; if you are Irish be careful attending your traditional rice feeding ceremony; don't go looking for hidden things, you don't know what you might find.
