Blog Day 337 - Sunday 28 February 2021

The last day of summer today and apparently it has been the coolest summer in something like 20 years.  I wonder how Tim Flannery and his global warming "sky is falling" acolytes are going to spin this. Remember this is the Tim Flannery whose particular field of expertise is studying animals that became extinct millions of years ago, also the same Tim Flannery who famously said that it would never rain in South Eastern Queensland ever again and suddenly amongst other things has become the ABC's expert on Koala bears. (I just had a look at Flannery's Wikipedia page and he certainly started academic life with a disadvantage, his first university qualification was a BA from Latrobe uni, I wonder if he enjoyed working at Maccas after that)?

As they say, how much can koala bear?

Auckland has gone into another seven day lockdown after a contagious male who was moving through the community when he should have been in isolation.  Anybody arriving in Victoria from NZ has to go into 14 day quarantine on arrival.  If New Zealand is lurching from lockdown to lockdown with it's well managed response to the virus what hope is there for us with our "gold standard" hotel quarantine and "best in Australia" contact tracing.

And gentle reader a bit of a reminder of where we currently fit into the top 10 table of vaccinations by percentage of population by country.  How silly of me we aren't in the top 10, Israel is top of the list with  over 93% of the population vaccinated and Serbia is the last of the top 10 with nearly 16% of the population vaccinated.  Australia is currently 78th out of 93 countries on the chart that I am using and we have vaccinated .93% of the population, that is less than 1% folk.

By all other measures we are doing remarkably well with only 5 new cases reported in the last 24 hours all in NSW and all ROTs.

Australia wide we have vaccinated 26,000 people, 3,762 of them in Victoria.

Victoria received the results of 7,400 tests in the last 24 hours, NSW 11,200 and Qld 5,200.  Eleven suburbs in Melbourne's west have been put on poo alert after traces of the virus was found in their sewage.

Currently Victoria has 15 active cases (probably with active bowels as well), 4 of which are ROTs, NSW has 38 active cases, all ROTs and Qld has 11 active cases also all ROTs.  Australia wide there are 34 active cases including 23 ROTs plus the 38 ROTs in NSW.

Worldwide there were 397,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours which appears to be a slight downward trend although the weekend figures are notoriously unreliable.  There were 8,371 deaths reported worldwide in the last 24 hours and this is continuing a stronger downward trend.

For the 24 hours of 27/02 the US reported 73,000 new infections and 2,151 deaths, both continuing a downward trend.  The UK reported 8,588 new infections and 345 deaths for the same period, also both continuing a downward trend.

Covid Normal Reminders;

Remember: to think carefully before mucking around with spreadsheets and tables in Blogger; to keep up your Covid era exercise regime; if you put your mask on when you enter a shop you can take it of again when you leave ( I seem to get home and realise I still have my mask on); to laugh at my jokes; it is a beautiful day out there, get out and enjoy it; keep your corporate governance up to date; bring yourself up to date with the stage 4 lockdown rules; to buy your valentine day flowers before lockdown; those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones; even in lockdown look both ways before you cross the road; to enjoy our refound freedoms, while they last; if you are Irish be careful attending your traditional rice feeding ceremony; don't go looking for hidden things, you don't know what you might find; to pay your bills on time; to move your bowels regularly.

  1. It looks like this whole vaccine thing is going well... I should be vaccinate in 2057 if I'm lucky. I'm sure the federal government can find a way to blame the states for this though.

    1. By 2057 you will be 77 and taking your grandchildren along to be vaccinated. I am sure that any delays will be caused by the states despite the excellent work of the Federal government.
