The second year of corona virus is rolling along and at least in Australia things are under control although outbreaks like the current one in Queensland will continue to cause local lockdowns, restrictions on travel,

inconvenience and loss of income etc for some time to come.  Unfortunately we can't say the same for some other parts of the world with high numbers of infections and deaths continuing.

Victoria has recorded all the zeroes again achieving 33 days with no community transmissions.  Some refugees from Qld are complaining that they were told when fleeing Qld they could quarantine at home in Victoria only to be bunged into hotel quarantine at Tullamarine airport, and for 14 days at their cost!

In the previous 24 hours NSW reported 3 new cases, all ROTs, however they have reported a further case of a resident in Byron Bay who was drinking in the same bar as the bachelorette party girls.  This person will be counted in the figures released tomorrow.

The NSW government is very nervous about this development as the Byron Bay Bluesfest is scheduled for the Easter weekend as well as an anticipated influx of the visitors for the long easter weekend.  The Bluesfest usually brings in about 50,000 people into the region.  The Bluesfest could still be cancelled.

Queensland has reported a further 2 community transmissions in the Brisbane area both linked to known clusters.  The 3 day lockdown of the greater Brisbane area is due to finish tomorrow night, there is a  strong possibility that this lockdown will be extended.  Happy Easter!

In the meantime us Victorians are sitting here in our smugness, knowing that we have a world class hotel quarantine system and gold standard contact tracing protecting us from the ravages decimating the northern states.

The testing results have bounced up with Victoria receiving the results of 22,000 tests in the last 24 hours; NSW 17,400 tests and Qld 33,400 tests.

Meanwhile a further 51,000 Aussies have received their vaccination shots in the last 24 hours for a total of 610,636.

There are currently 155 active cases nationally and 138 of those are ROTs.

Making our situation fade into insignificance there were 402,000 new infections reported worldwide in the last 24 hours and a further 7,918 deaths.  The daily increase is one of the lowest recorded for some weeks, but the figures vary significantly day to day so it is hard to place any real credibility on them.

The US reported 68,600 new infections in the last 24 hours which seems to be in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment.  They also recorded 668 deaths in the same period and this seems to be a continuing pattern of declining numbers, although once again the fluctuations make it difficult to analyse.

The UK appears to be continuing it's decline in new virus numbers with 4,800 recorded in the last 24 hours and 23 deaths in the same period.  These death figures, if accurate, are reflecting a real improvement.
