Blog Day 386 - Sunday 18 April 2021

You have probably heard by now that the Kooyong Colt, aka Andrew Peacock has passed away aged 82.  He had been living in the US for some time and was in Dallas Texas when he died.  Some of us will remember him as leader of the Liberal opposition in the Hawke federal government days.  Unfortunately he came up unsuccessfully against Hawke in two federal elections when Hawke was at his most popular.  Peacock also had a bit of back stabbing going on in his own party at the time with John Howard also vying for the party leadership.

Peacock inherited the blur ribbon seat of Kooyong after Sir Robert Menzies retired.  Although Peacock never made PM he was a successful foreign minister during the Malcolm Fraser years.  Peacock was a bit of a ladies man and famously dated the American actress Shirley Maclaine for a period of time.

After a hiatus due to supply difficulties and concerns about the AstraZeneca vaccine, vaccinations in Victoria will kick of with a vengeance tomorrow.  The state government is opening three mass vaccination centres, two in Melbourne and one in Geelong.  If a person is in the appropriate class, ie 1a or 1b, they can make an appointment to visit one of the centres or turn up as a walk in.  Initially the state will have 60,000 doses available per week ramping up to 100,000 doses per week in two weeks time.

Currently there are 154 active cases Australia wide of which 150 are ROTs.  Victoria has 10 of these cases, all ROTs; NSW 70, 67 of which are ROTs; Qld has 27 cases, 26 of which are ROTs.

Victoria has now gone 51 days without a local transmission.

There were 14 new cases reported Australia wide in the last 24 hours all ROTs.  The total of new cases Australia wide for the previous day has been upgraded from 10 to 21 but once again they are all ROTs.

Testing results are lower in all states, Victoria received the results of 8,700 tests in the last 24 hours; NSW 8,100 and Qld 3,596.

Once again the rest of the world is making Australia look like absolute champions in the control of the virus.  In the last 24 hours 620,000 new infections were reported worldwide and 11,550 deaths were reported in the same period.  These figures are continuing to trend upwards.  At this rate the number of deaths worldwide will exceed 3 million in the next 24 hours.

The US figures are also continuing to trend upwards with 79,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 926 deaths for the same period.  The US has administered 202 million doses of the various vaccines that it is using.  One would think that this level of vaccination within the population should be having a beneficial impact on the spread of the virus, but apparently not.

The UK continues to control the spread of the virus although the decline in daily new infections has flattened with 2,800 new infections reported in the last 24 hours.  The UK reported 34 deaths in the last 24 hours.

I think that Brazil has just given up and all they are doing now is looking for vacant land where they can bury their dead.  Brazil reported 86,000 new infections in the last 24 hours and 3,305 deaths in the same period.

Turkey's infection rate continues to climb with 63,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, however they are managing to keep a lid on the death rate with 289 deaths reported in the same period.
