Blog Day 414 - Sunday 16 May 2021
Turned cold and wintery here in Melbourne with snow down to 700 metres. Grey and blustery outside for my walk but still people around, with and without dogs, at the cafes and shops.
Australia wide things are still looking good with only eight new cases reported in the last 24 hours all of whom are ROTs. That leaves us with 158 active cases Australia wide of which 152 are ROTs. No community transmissions have been reported Australia wide for some time, at least 70 plus days in Victoria. There are 24 people in hospital Australia wide due to the virus and 3 of those are currently in ICU.
Testing figures remain reasonably high with the results of 14,300 tests received in Victoria in the last 24 hours and 12,200 in NSW.
Worldwide we still have the usual range of the good, the bad and the ugly. India is reporting its figures a day late so on 14/5 India reported 343,000 new infections which is a decline from the 400,000 plus figures previously reported. India also reported 4,000 deaths for the 24 hour period.
As an accountant round figures attract my attention and make me a little suspicious and this figure of 4,000 deaths in India looks like a guess or an estimate to me. Lets see what the morrow brings.
Brazil's infections appear to be still increasing but the deaths there, whilst still high, appear to be stable.
The rest of the countries on my little table below appear to be steady or slightly declining in both new infections or deaths. France has reported only 7,000 new infections for the 24 hour period which I don't believe for one moment.
As the Olympics are due to be held in Japan in two months time I have added that country to my table so that we can keep track of what is happening there. In the last 24 hours Japan reported 6,300 new infections which appears to be a pattern of increasing daily numbers. Japan has reported a total of 674,000 infections for the pandemic. Japan seems to have a pattern of seemingly getting the new infection numbers under control and then letting it get out of hand again. In March/April they were reporting a thousand new infections a day.
In the last 24 Japan reported 81 new virus related deaths which is a bit lower than what appears to be the current daily figure of around 100 deaths. The daily death figure in April was in the 30's, 40's and 50's.
Apart from the fact that my blood pressure tablets make me ineligible to compete in most Olympic sports I would be really hesitant to go, even if selected.
If this keeps up will the Olympics go ahead?
