Blog Day 416 - Tuesday 18 May 2021

First of all, the good news.  It looks like the annual camping, fishing, boating, and duck hunting trip to Lake Eildon is on again this year.  Dependant on weather it looks like a group of us will be going for 3 or 4 days next week.  Usually this trip takes place in the middle of March each year so it will be colder but not necessarily wetter.  Some years we have had 20 to 30 people attend but this year I reckon we will be lucky to get half a dozen.

The opening day of the duck season is on Wednesday and the season is only lasting for a few weeks.  Originally the daily bag limit was only two birds per shooter per day but this has now been increased to 5 per shooter per day.  Usually the season opens on the third Saturday of March and continues for three or four months, but not this year.

We will arrive Tuesday, set up camp, get the boats in the water and do a bit of fishing.  Wednesday will involve shooting and fishing and likewise for Thursday.  Whether we pack up and leave on Thursday or Friday will be a bit dependent on the weather.

Currently Lake Eildon is at 55% of capacity which isn't too bad, I have seen it at 5%.  At 5% it is a bloody long walk from the camp site to the boats.

I have posted some photos below of our camping trips, these are from some years ago as I couldn't find any recent ones. Still the same site though.

The original tent, since gone to god.

Onto the the virus facts and figures.  Life in a covid virus world is rolling along.  Australia is still doing well with 5 new cases in the last 24 hours, all ROTs.  There are currently 131 active cases Australia wide of which 128 are ROTs, and there are 23 people in hospital Australia wide with 3 in ICU.

Although the vaccination process is rolling out Australia wide we certainly aren't breaking any records.  The best result to date was 83,000 vaccination doses applied Australia wide in the 24 hours of 17/05.  At this rate to vaccinate 20 million Australians with one dose it will take 240 days, let alone give everybody a second dose.

I think that there appears to be a little bit of good news in international figures.  All of the countries that I have been monitoring, except Japan, have reported a decline in daily new infections and this is reflected in a decline in the worldwide total.  Japan's daily new infections are currently remaining steady.

Worldwide the daily death rate also seems to be in decline although not as strongly as the infection rate, this could be as a result of the time lapse between movements in infection rates and death rates.

The other thing to remember is that these figures can still be affected by the reporting lapses over the weekend.  The figures that we get here on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are usually the most accurate.
