Blog Day 431 - Thursday 03 June 2021 - Day 7 Lockdown Version 4

Another Thursday when I should be doing my shift at the Shrine, which I am not doing, why? I hear you ask, cause it is bloody shut again I say.

Likewise my U3A group which was supposed to meet tomorrow morning is in the same boat, (appropriate analogy for a Military and Maritime group don't you think?), closed until further notice.

I know that my complaints are minor compared to people who are battling to keep their businesses going or people who aren't getting paid and the poor folk are trying to work from home and attend to home learning for their children.

The most irritating part of all this is that it is caused by the various authorities being unable to deal with a minor outbreak of the virus.  Remember this all started by one, I repeat one, infectious person returning to Melbourne from hotel quarantine in Adelaide.  You would think by now we would nearly have a handle on how to deal with all this.

The Federal govt has announced a special payment will be made available to those people whose income has been severely disrupted by the current Victorian lockdown.  Depending on circumstances individuals will be eligible for a weekly payment of $500 or $350.

Whilst not agreeing to the Federal govt having to continually bail out an incompetent state government I agree that somebody had to make some funds available to these people.  At the end of the day it is all taxpayers money anyway.

In the last 24 hours Victoria has reported 3 new local infections, all known contacts of existing cases, which brings our total number of local infections to 60.  No other local infections reported elsewhere in Australia.

Victoria received the results of 57,519 tests in the last 24 hours.  85% of test results are provided within 24 hours and 98% within 48 hours. To give credit where credit is due this is an amazing result.

Over 50,000 vaccination doses were administered in Victoria in the last 24 hours, this is the total from all sources, state vaccination centres, GPs and Fed govt vaccinations.

I have worked out why the international infections and death figures have been shonky over the last couple of days.  Last Monday was a public holiday in a number of countries hence the usual weekend lackadaisical counting carried on to the Monday, thing look like they are straightening themselves out for today's figures.

India appears to be bringing their new infections under control with significant reductions each day which is being followed by equally significant reductions in the Indian death toll.

Brazil is the only country in my list that isn't behaving itself with nearly 80,000 new infections per day and 2,400 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The US infection and death figures have plateaued again with no significant downward movements but even more importantly no significant upward movement.

Great Britain has recorded zero deaths in the last 24 hours for the first time since March 2020, well done the Poms.  That's the blitz spirit for you.

And in good news for the Olympics Japan has recorded a decline in new infections in the last 24 hours although the death numbers have increased slightly.
