Blog Day 449 - Thursday 24 June 2021 - Day 28 Lockdown Version 4 (extended - Lighter)

A few days since the last blog but still life goes on.

I have completed my initial two day face to face zoom training with the ABS and I am ready to take to the streets.  From the comments made by my fellow students my recruitment shemozzle wasn't an entirely isolated incident with others having experienced similar.

Some of you may remember my excitement when I recently discovered a new pop group called Coldplay.  Well, I have discovered another.  I have discovered a group called Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, their best known number is a piece called Home and it is fantastic.  Apparently there isn't a person in the group called Edward Sharpe, but that is neither here nor there.

It looks like the border gates are slamming shut again with various states declaring different levels of isolation from NSW.  Victoria has declared all of greater Sydney and Wollongong a red zone with all of the restrictions that incurs.  No NSW residents from the red zone are allowed to travel to Victoria without an exemption and any Victorian travelling from a red zone will have to quarantine for 14 days.

What a bugger, all this is happening just as we Victorians were about to get another partial release from our Covid restrictions.  Let's hope that still happens, supposed to be from 11.59pm tonight.

It is a bit hard to tell what is happening state by state as the states, particularly NSW are mixing up their figures for the previous 24 hours with new infections discovered overnight but after the 24 hour cut off.  But that being said it would appear that NSW is a little bit in the poo.

From what I can work out, Victoria had one new local infection in the most recent 24 hour period plus one new infection detected today.  The Victorian case yesterday was a close contact of an existing infected person already in quarantine.  However the case reported here today is a man who has flown in from Sydney and has been tested and found positive after arriving in Melbourne.  Early investigations reveal that he had been to a function in a 'green' zone in Sydney.

Victoria currently has 14 active local infection cases, which currently appears to be under control.

NSW has reported 19 new cases which to the best of my ability includes 11 new infections up to yesterday's 24 hour cut off time and 6 more reported overnight and 1 new ROT, which still leaves us one short, so go figure.

The official figures for NSW show 43 reported local infections but in her media conference this morning "Our Glad" the premier of NSW said that there are 49.

Queensland reported 3 new local infections in the last 24 hours bringing their total to 8 current local infected cases.

Give or take a few there are 65 reported current infected cases Australia wide.

In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 23,000 tests and NSW 48,000.

Worldwide there is the good, the bad and the ugly.  India and the USA are the good with significant reductions in daily infections figures.  The bad is the UK with a continuing increase in daily infections, having gone from 2,000 per day a few weeks ago to 11,500 in the last 24 hours.  If they are not careful they will move from bad to ugly.

And the prize for ugly goes to Brazil!  In the last 24 hours the Brazilians reported 88,000 new infections and 2,131 deaths.  There is absolutely no indication of either the new infection rate or the death rate levelling out let alone decline. These figures continue to increase, it must be destroying the country or was it in a bad state to start with?
