Blog Day 461 - Tuesday 06 July 2021 - Day 12 Covid Normal (Sort Of)

The big news of the day is that it is likely that the Grand Prix due to be run in Melbourne in November will be cancelled.  This is expected to be formally announced this afternoon.  You may recall that last year's Melbourne Grand Prix which was due to be held in March 2020 was cancelled due to the corona virus starting to make itself felt in Australia.  It was really the first time that we started to think that the virus may turn out to be more than an irritation and was going to affect us as well as the rest of the world.  Little did we know that 18 months later it would still be dominating our lives.

This year's Grand Prix was postponed from March to November in the hope that we would be better placed to host it later in the year.  Sadly this appears to be not the case.

When I stop laughing and my ribs stop hurting I will have to discuss the rugby players in NSW who decided that they would have a party.  Said party was raided by the rozzers and said rugby players either hid under beds or in cupboards or did a runner sneaking out of side doors.  Anyway one of the players has been fined $50,000 by the rugby governing body and suspended for 12 weeks, the other players have been fined a range of fines all of which including the $50,000 fine add up to more than $300,000.  They have also been fined by the state for breaking lockdown regulations.

It has been a while since I looked at a list of countries by number of deaths per million.  I have detailed below a list of the top 20 countries by deaths per million plus Australia for the sake of comparison.
  1. Peru           5,779
  2. Hungary    3,113
  3. Bosnia       2,965
  4. Czechia     2,825
  5. Gibraltar   2,791
  6. San Marino 2,647
  7. North Macedonia 2,633
  8. Bulgaria     2,629
  9. Montenegro 2,577
  10. Brazil         2,453
  11. Slovakia     2,291
  12. Belgium     2,164
  13. Colombia   2,128
  14. Slovenia     2,126
  15. Argentina   2,116
  16. Italy           2,115
  17. Croatia      2,015
  18. Poland       1,986
  19. UK            1,879
  20. USA          1,866
Australia        35

It is interesting that 10 of the top twenty are countries from the old European Eastern Bloc and or the Balkans.  Three countries are from South America and three from Europe.  I haven't counted Gibraltar and San Marino in the the European countries as their very small populations will have skewed their figures out of proportion to the infection rate.  And of course there is the USA sneaking in at number twenty.

Of further interest is that there are no African or Asian countries in the top 20 deaths by population.  This is amazing given the population densities and state of the medical services in some of these countries.

Meanwhile back in Australia, we have recorded 26 new cases Australia wide in the last 24 hours of which 7 are ROTs.  NSW has reported 18 community infections in the last 24 hours but recorded 35 in the 24 hours prior.  The greater Sydney lockdown was due to end on Friday however given the figures this is now unlikely.

Victoria has now recorded 6 consecutive days without a local infection.

Victoria received the results of 22,000 tests in the last 24 hours, NSW 32,000 and Qld also 22,000.

Vaccinations are rolling along with 23,400 doses administered in Victoria in the last 24 hours and 20,600 in NSW.

Currently there are 474 active virus cases of which 383 are local community infections of which 325 are located in NSW.

Worldwide the figures available today are looking a little unreliable, particularly those for the USA and Brazil.  Although slowed a little India's daily infection figures continue to decline with a corresponding decline in the daily death numbers.

The UK seems determined to proceed with the lifting of the majority of virus restriction on 19/7 and will be depending on vaccinations to control any outbreaks.  Their daily infections numbers seem to have stabilised in the mid 20,000s.
