Blog Day 476 - Wednesday 21 July 2021 - Day 1 of Covid Lockdown V5.2
Anybody else getting a sense of deja vu all over again? Of course this is day one of lockdown V5.2 and we have a further 7 days of this to look forward to. A continuation of 5km restrictions on travel, wearing masks at all times etc, etc, etc.
I will start the day with something light-hearted from the Tokyo Olympics. I see that one of the Czech beach volley ball girls has been sent home due to the virus. Who would have thought the Czechs would have a beach volley ball team. If I recall correctly they are a landlocked country and last time I was there I didn't see many beaches.
And my word they would be a bit chilly in their regulation beach volley ball costumes.
Today's virus figures don't look too flash with 22 new local cases in Victoria in the last 24 hours and 110 in NSW in the same period. At least 43 of the new NSW cases had been moving around the community whilst infectious. In Victoria 6 of the 22 new cases had been in the community however due to the lockdown their movements had been limited.
Including the above there were 134 new infections Australia wide in the last 24 hours plus another 6 ROTs in hotel quarantine. As a result of this there are 1,583 current infections Australia wide including 108 ROTs.
Victoria received the results of 59,000 tests in the last 24 hours, NSW 83,000 and Qld 13,000, the NSWelshpeople are really hitting those testing queues.
In the last 24 hours Victoria administered 34,000 vaccines, NSW 67,000 and Qld 33,000. On the previous 24 hours Victoria administered 24,001 vaccines, I kid you not, and I like to think that I was the 24,001th.
It would appear that we are finally getting some traction with the immunisation program.
I had a look at the Indonesian figures today and my wordy have they got a problem. Over the last 3 or 4 days they have had daily new infection rates of 30,000 to 57,000 and daily death rates exceeding a 1,000 per day up to 1,300 per day.
The rest of the world is trundling along with overall world new daily infections appearing to be declining a bit.
The UK is still of concern with daily new infection rates between 40,000 and 50,000 and death rates up to 50 per day. But, still it was good to see them all out at clubs and discos celebrating "Freedom Day". It will be interesting to see how this pans out and is it a practical model for dealing with the pandemic once a certain level of immunisation is reached.

We are starting to really ramp up on the vaccinations which is good - and leads me to believe that by the time we are out of this and back to normal in lets say 4-5 weeks time, I think any flair up by then will not necessarily result in an automatic lockdown. roughly 1mil vaccinations per week and rising. Let's say another 7-8mill by the end of Aug. That would put us at almost 20mil single shots. By that stage, surely we are past the need for a lock down type response to outbreaks?
