Blog Day 492 - Friday 06 August 2021 - Day 1 of Covid Lockdown V6
There is some discussion in this household as to technically whether this lockdown is a continuation of V5, as we never fully got out of V5, or is it a new lockdown V6. For the sake of ease of counting I am opting for day 1 of lockdown V6.
Once again we have the Irish to blame for this lockdown, it would appear that one of the sources of the virus in this instance is an Irish school in the western suburbs. This same Irish school was also a source of the virus in a previous lockdown.
It would appear that some folk in the Irish community did not follow the rules about family gatherings hence the spread from the school source. As we know the Irish like to party.
To all of my Irish readers may I point out that a pint of Guiness with a Jamieson chaser is not a cure for the corona virus.
I have come up with a magnificent idea. We should declare a hard border at the Yarra river, this would isolate the rule breaking north and northwest (N&NW) of Melbourne from the law abiding and responsible citizens of the south and south east (S&SE).
The N&NW could become an urban wasteland and descend into anarchy with every man, woman and child fending for themselves, especially fighting over toilet paper. Meanwhile the S&SE could become like a new Utopia, disease free, with people politely allowing other people to freely buy toilet paper in the supermarket.
There is obviously a little bit of work to be done on this, but this is what we have public servants for. I reckon I could get elected on this platform.
But seriously folk I reckon once again although most people will be pretty pissed off with this lockdown the majority will follow the rules and try and get it over and done with. Amazing that one day Victorians are celebrating a triple doughnut day and the next day we have gone back into lockdown.
Just doing some back of the beer coaster calculations and observations of the current USA & UK infections and death figures. In both countries they have significantly removed virus related restrictions on daily life and subsequently experienced dramatic increases in daily infection rates however the death rates are not increasing at the same rate. Is this as a result of both countries having fairly high inoculation rates or is the death rate still catching up with the increase in infection rates. Lets hope that it is as a result of high vaccination rates and not the alternative.
Although you wouldn't believe it from the media and some state governments it would appear that the vaccination program in Australia is gaining some traction. Currently nationally there has been 8.8m 1st vaccine doses administered and 4.3m second doses. Hopefully the current scares around the country are encouraging people to get vaccinated.
Meanwhile, NSW still has big problems with 291 new local infections reported in the last 24 hours and at least one further death. Victoria has recorded 6 new infections in the last 24 hours but apparently a number of these people were active in the community whilst infectious, hence the rapid move into lockdown V6. Qld reported 10 new local infections in the last 24 hours and Tassie have even joined the action with one new case. Overall there were 308 new virus cases reported in the last 24 hours (that is a good calibre of a number).
Currently there are 4,123 active locally acquired virus cases nationally of which NSW accounts for nearly 4,000.
In the last 24 hours NSW received the results of 110,000 tests, Victoria 110,000, Qld 48,000 and Tassie 823 tests. If Tassie was testing at the NSW rate the whole population would be tested in 3.5 days!
Unfortunately NSW is still reporting virus related deaths with one more in the last 24 hours, NSW has now reported 23 deaths in this current wave of the virus.
Further to my comments above about the US and UK figures. In the last 24 hours the US reported 93,000 new infections. Considering the USA had got their daily infection rates down into the 10s and 20,000s this is a dramatic increase. However back in February 2021 when the daily infection rate was around the 100,000 mark the US was registering approximately 3,000 to 4,000 deaths a day, they are currently reporting 500 deaths per day.
Similarly the UK daily infection figures are back up around 29,000 per day with 120 deaths per day. Back in January when the UK was recording these sorts or infection numbers the daily death rate was 1,500.
Contrary to what the anti vaxers in the street say maybe the vaccinations do actually work.

Quite concerned with whom in your house you are discussing your problems with. I don't think you have a dog or cat to discuss this with. Hope you noticed we returned our case back to NSW as soon as there was a flight available.
ReplyDeleteI usually chat with the little voices in my head, some arguments I win, some I lose. A bit like life really. There you go, two days in lockdown and I have gone all philosophical.
