Blog Day 567 - Friday 22 October 2021 - Day 01 of Covid Lockdown V6.0 Lite

I am referring to the current covid lockdown status as "V6.0 Lite".  Although many restrictions have been lifted, many that affect day to day life still remain so hence the title Lockdown V6.0 Lite.

As you would be aware many of the lockdown restrictions were lifted at 11.59pm last night and life is starting to get back to normal.

I went for a walk this morning there was certainly a lot more vehicle traffic around and more people in the streets.  I was a bit surprised that the cafes weren't as busy as I thought they would be and the ladies hairdressers didn't appear to be particularly busy.

That wasn't the case for my barber, he had 10 scruffy looking blokes lined up outside, two waiting inside and 3 chairs going flat out.  Looks like it will be a while before I get done.

The pub across the road doesn't appear to be reopening today but that doesn't surprise me as they were slow reopening on previous occasions when the lockdown has been lifted.  I wasn't surprised that they haven't reopened given the size of the place and the staff needed to service a limited number of patrons, probably not economical at this time.

Remember this isn't a full reopening, patron limits apply in hospitality, retail isn't open at all for face to face dealings, place like gyms aren't able to reopen at all, travel restrictions are still in place and we are still wearing masks.

And yet amidst all the fireworks, backslapping and excitement a further 2,189 Victorians were reported as infected by the virus in the last 24 hours and 16 Victorians died of virus related issues in the same period.

Victoria currently has 784 people in hospital due to the virus, 145 are in ICU and 94 are on ventilators.

The daily death figures are continuing to increase gradually, likewise the numbers in hospital and in ICU.  At 2,189 new infections that is a slight decrease on the previous day's figure of 2,235 but well above the figures for the previous few days.

The next couple of weeks will be very interesting to see what happens with all of the figures now that people are mingling freely and the rules have been relaxed.  But as a counter to this the 1st and 2nd vaccination percentages continue to rise in encouraging numbers.  As an aside I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday who has received his 3rd shot, a booster shot.  Although previously fully vaccinated with the AZ vaccines he received the Pfizer the other day.  He was visiting his doctor for other reasons and the doc told him that they had some spare vaccines and did he want a booster, which he gladly did.

I have waited a while for the up to date vaccination %s for Victoria but they are not out yet.  So, currently the national vaccination rate for 2nd vaccines is 71.7% and 1st vaccination is 86.1%.  No figures for Vic as yet.
