Blog Day 575 - Tuesday 02 November 2021 - Day 04 of Covid Normal

Melbourne Cup Day

We are referring to the Melbourne Cup today as the race that stops a nation but also the race that starts a state.

As the covid figures are looking ok today with less than 1,000 new infections in the last 24 hours and the vaccination rates are rolling along nicely I thought today I would focus on the Melbourne Cup race meeting and my prowess as a punter.

So below is my betting history for the day, I have started off with a bank of $120.

Race 1 -     Did not bet

Race 2 -     $5 each way on no. 3 Skymax at $13.00 for the win - was running 2nd in the straight but faded towards the end, ended up about 6th.  bank balance $110.

Race 3 -    $5 each way on no. 4 Excelman and backed a winner - paying $32.50 for the win and $11.00 for the place. If history is anything to go on, I should to take the money and run now, but I won't and will probably end up losing the lot. Bank balance $144.

Race 4 -     $5 each way on no.4 Charleise at $5 for the win - came charging down the outside for a gallant 3rd and paid $11 for the place.  Bank balance $145.

Having first beer for the day, cup day tradition.

Race 5 -     $5 each way on no. 7 Pindaric at $10 for the win - led the race to about the 400 metre mark and then faded badly, did not run a place.  Bank balance $135.

Race 6 -     $5 each way on no. 7 Bacchanalia - only 1,000 meters and this horse didn't quite make the distance although ended up coming 5th or thereabouts. Bank balance $125.

Melbourne cup is the next race, I will need to seriously study the form guide for this one.

Race 7 Melbourne Cup - Hang the expense I thought, this is a big race so go big.  $10 each way on Spanish Mission at $9.50 for the win and $10 each way on Grand Promenade at $16 for the win.  Grand Promenade didn't make the grade and Spanish Mission struggled in for a 3rd paying $3.20 for a return of $32.00.  So, stake $40, return $32.  Current bank balance $117.

Race 8 - $5 each way on no. 6 Agreeable at $10.00 for the win - look outside your bedroom window in the morning and you will see it pulling a milk cart.  Current bank balance $107.

Two more races to go, might have to go big or go home!

Race 9 - $5 each way on no. 7 Villaden at $7.50 for the win and $5 each way on no. 3 Knightstown at $71 for the win.  In racing terminology neither of these horses saluted the winning post or even anywhere near it. Current bank balance $87.

Anybody else notice that the bank balance had been declining since I've had a drink or two?

One race to go - the "Getout Stakes", better go and study the form.

Race 10 - $5 each way on no.4 Prime Candidate at $10 for the win, Prime Candidate came in 3rd and paid $15.50.  Also had $5 each way on Despatch at $51 for the win, Despatch came in stone, motherless last.  Bank balance $82.

So I started the day with $120 and finished with $82, doesn't say much for my career as a professional punter.

For those of you who are concerned with my rather untidy appearance I am determined to get a hair cut and beard trim tomorrow even if I have to camp outside the barber's shop.
