Blog Day 584 - Thursday 11 November 2021 - Day 13 of Covid Normal

Remembrance Day

As you would all be aware today being the eleventh day of the eleventh month is Remembrance Day, previously known as Armistice Day.  At this time on this date in 1918 The Great War on the Western Front against Germany ended.  The armistice was signed by all parties in a railway carriage on a siding in France at around 6.00am in the morning with the agreement to stop fighting at 11.00am.

The allies had already signed armistice documents with Germany's various allies therefore the Western Front in France and Belgium was the last front where any significant fighting was still taking place.

The actual treaty that formally ended TGW, the Treaty of Versailles, wasn't completed and executed until June 1919.

Every year since 1919 this date has been recognised by all the nations, at least on the allies side, by various ceremonies commemorating the service and sacrifice of their people in not only TGW but all wars and peacekeeping.

This morning I attended a service at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, the first public service there in two years.  Although no schools attended there was a good turnout by the general public.  Various dignities also attended, including the state governor, the premier, the prime minister and other assorted VIPs.

There were coppers, bobbies, rozzers, peelers and the old bill, of both uniformed and plainclothes varieties everywhere. The mounted squad, the dog squad, highway patrol, public disorder unit, and general duties police officers were all over the place.  Given the number of political representatives attending the service I daresay the authorities were prepared for anything.

Remember the Shrine has been the scene of some particularly unpleasant protests in the last few months and it was obvious that nothing like that was going to happen today.

I didn't see any disturbances apart from one of the ill at ease of the public who started shouting out stuff but he was rapidly swamped and moved along, may have been some early indulging of substances involved.  One of the Shrine staff told me that there had been some sort of disturbance away from the Shrine Reserve but I didn't see or hear anything.

Anyway, the service went over particularly well, no sailors in the honour guard fainted (not that I saw anyway) and a lone Winjeel aircraft was all the RAAF could provide for a fly over.  Just one minor criticism, sailors still march like sailors.

Interestingly on the first Armistice Day in 1919 the world was still in he midst of the Spanish flu epidemic and here we are again with history repeating itself.

And talking about epidemics, our very own epidemic keeps rolling along.

Nationally and in Victoria the vaccination rates have slowed down although they are still pretty impressive by world standards.  It was to be expected that the vaccination rates would slow down once the hard core rump of anti vaxers and vaccine hesitant were reached.

Currently 89.7% of the eligible Australian population have received their 1st dose and 92.4% of the eligible Victorian population have received their 1st shot.  81.5% of the eligible Australian population are now double dosed and 85.7% of the Victorian population likewise.

In the last 24 hours 1,313 new infections were reported in Victoria which is an increase on the previous two days when 1,003 and 1,069 new infections were reported.

Of course given the level of vaccinations within the state the important figures to watch are the hospital admissions and numbers in ICU and on ventilators.  Currently in Victoria these numbers are declining.

Currently there are 457 patients in hospital with the virus, down from 579 two days ago, of these 79 are in ICU and 48 on ventilators, down from 90 and 55 respectively also two days ago.

Under the suppression model we can expect hospital admissions to continue to decline or plateau as vaccination rates go up and the only folk ending up in hospital are the unvaccinated or possibly a small number of unfortunate vaccinated people possibly with other underlying health issues.

Unfortunately we continue to record deaths in Victoria with 3 in the last 24 hours and 14 the day before and 10 the day before that.

We are still testing reasonable numbers with 67,000 test results received in the last 24 hours.

One day when I get the courage I will try to tackle the goings on in IBAC with the Labor Party apparatchiks and their cronies trying to squirm their way around the corruption surrounding the branch stacking.  It also looks like the "Red Shirts" scandal may raise its ugly head again which is a good thing as it was swept under the carpet last time around.
