Blog Day 699 - Wednesday 09 March 2022 - Day 12 Even More Covid Nearly Normaller

Sorry that I have been absent for a few days, but been a bit busy, you know, life as a retired gentleman.

I was called in to do an emergency double shift at the Shrine yesterday.  The school groups are back and with a vengeance.  I did three tours yesterday, all of my favourite year nines, all the standard one hour introduction to the Shrine.  Multiple tours can be a bit tiring as you are on your feet for at least an hour for each tour plus going up and down lots of stairs and there is lots of talking.

Now here is the funny bit.  I had a phone call from one of the Shrine staff this morning to tell me that one of the students in one of the school groups has tested positive to Covid this morning, and as a potential close contact to this student I need to be aware of that.

I don't have to do anything in particular apart from be on the lookout for covid symptoms and to RAT if any symptoms occur.  To err on the side of caution I will RAT for the next three or so days.  I conducted a RAT this morning and that has proved negative

I was supposed to catch up with a couple of friends for lunch today which I have also postponed, not essential to do so, but just being careful.

Now, I admired Warnie, as a cricketer, as much as the next person but I am starting to get sick of the wall to wall sycophant coverage of his death.  No doubt Shane Warne was a great cricketer, probably the greatest spin bowler in my time, but to read all of the eulogies one would think that he walked on water.

Almost everybody in the sporting world, media and stars of Neighbours are all claiming to have been his best friend.  If his philandering, gambling and smoking is mentioned it is all in the light of what a larrikin he has been.  Anybody else with his record of misogyny would have been torn apart by the sisterhood.

And so far nobody has mentioned his little episode with the ignominious winding up his charitable foundation. The following is extracted from Wikipedia;

"an investigation in 2015 into the Foundation after it failed to submit financial returns. Financial returns in 2014 had revealed the charity spent $281,434 on fundraising during the year, but its efforts only raised $279,198. Newspapers alleged that the organisation was only donating 16 cents in the dollar of its income.[6][7] During one year, the Chief Executive of the Foundation, Shane Warne's brother Jason, was paid a salary of $80,000 whilst only $54,600 was distributed to beneficiaries. The organisation spent more than $300,000 on catering, alcohol and prizes for events while posting significant annual losses.

In January 2016, in response to what it termed "unwarranted speculation", the Foundation announced its intention to distribute its final funds on 18 March 2016 and close down."

Not intending to speak ill of the dead, just applying a little bit of balance.

Ok, now back to the land of the living and a bit of an update in the covid world.  Not much movement in the vaccination rates with 94.4% of the national population double vaccinated and 57.8% having received their booster shot as well.  I daresay 94% to 95% double vaxxed is the percentage that we can expect vaccinations to level off at, although we have a way to go with the booster shots.

The Victorian daily new infection rates are ranging between 5,000 and 7,000 per day.  The range appears to be more as a consequence of the irregularities in counting and reporting with the true daily number actually settling somewhere in the middle.

NSW is in a similar situation with their daily infection numbers ranging between 9,000 and 13,000.

Queensland's daily figures are ranging between 3,000 and 5,000.

Nationally there are 1,737 patients in hospital with covid, of which 110 are in ICU and 22 on ventilators.  In Victoria there are 196 covid patients in hospital, 32 in ICU and 3 on ventilators.  Therefore, although the numbers of new infections are not declining significantly the numbers of covid patients both nationally and in Victoria continue to decline.

Given the range of number of deaths reported it is difficult to draw any conclusions as to the movement in the death rates.  The little table below shows the death numbers for the last few days for Victoria, NSW, Qld and nationally;

Deaths    5/3        6/3        7/3        8/3        9/3

Vic            24        4            2            6            9

NSW        10        5            5            5            9

Qld            12        2            1            5            13

National    48        13           32        16            34

As we can see there is no real pattern to these numbers.

And now for the usual tables;
