As my many erudite and loyal readers would know I am a keen observer of current trends and fads. My role as an influencer is often enhanced as a result of these observations. I have recently noticed that alternative uses for the following words and phrases seem to have crept into our lexicon.
- I have noticed that new movies or TV shows are no longer released but they are "dropped". Where has this come from? To me being dropped is a bad thing, as in being dropped from the footy team.
- In movie and TV reviews the reviewer often refers to a "showrunner", what the heck is a showrunner?
- Anybody else notice that a fashion model no longer models for a designer but they now "walk" for that particular fashion house.
- We no longer have the beginning of a program or a sports event or the like, we have the "top of the program" or "top of the hour". Why not just say "at the start of the hour" etc.
- This one isn't a new usage of a word but it still irritates me. I was visiting some friends recently and as I left I was asked if I wanted to "use the bathroom". I said that I didn't have time for a bath but I would be happy to use the toilet or the lavatory.
- Real estate ads refer to a property having an "al fresco" meaning an outdoor entertainment area, I stand to be corrected on this one but I don't think that you can have an al fresco. You can have an "al fresco lunch" or "dine alfresco" but not have an al fresco.
- Notice how we don't have a storm any more but we have a "weather event".
Due to a shortage of volunteers I am still doing extra shifts at the Shrine, anybody interested in being trained as a Shrine volunteer? If you are really lucky you might get me as your mentor. I currently have a protege and I am teaching him everything I know, so far he has filled the back of a postage stamp with notes.
I am halfway through my U3A Maritime and Military History Group presentation titled the "AIF on the Western Front in The Great War". This is a four hour presentation over two weeks and I had the audience on the edge of their seats for the first two hours and if they attend for the next two hour session they will find out who wins. I bet that you are all disappointed that you can't attend four hours of me talking about TGW!
The Victorian State Election is scheduled to be held on 26/11/2022 and the current Labor government currently appears to be unbeatable. Currently Labor has odds of $1.08 to win, the Liberals $8.00 and $101 for any other party.
Unfortunately the opposition appears to have gone missing in action, which means we are doomed to another four years of government by Dan and his bunch of branch stacking, red shirts ripping off, memory loss, profligate with taxpayers money, useless behind schedule & over budget projects, collapsing ambulance and health services, union cronies. (Throw in a few allegedly in there in case of any legal issues).
I am still waiting for the VEC to contact me about working on the state election.
As I mentioned last week the reporting of the covid figures nationally and for the states has become so haphazard and irregular it is an offence to the ordered and logical mind of a person such my good self. It is difficult to draw any meaningful conclusions from the weekly figures as they are presented, however I will continue to monitor them for any obvious and extreme movements. At the moment everything appears to be going Ok, but who would know.
A couple of different tables below just to remind us that the flu is still around and that something called "monkeypox" has hit our shores, even though we are a continent "girt by sea".
I reckon if you are going to have a pox monkeypox sounds pretty grim, especially when you think about how you might catch it.
With that thought in mind catch ya next week.
